thank you everyone for the info.
i ordered a couple of the headers and pins from monster last week, should hopefully be here this week.

heres how ive currently done my USB3 header.
i used the big sleeve in my MDPC kit and after burning though most of the jumbo shrink with the kit, switched up to some raychem 1" shrink that was a little thicker walled.
the MDPC shrink didnt want to shrink up tight enough and would split from too much heat.

i think it turned out pretty well.
zipped tied them of the board end to keep them together and sleeve in place.

thank you for the help!!!!

Looks ok. smile.gif

However, with computer sleeving I suggest getting 3:1 shrinks, either MDPC or other brand that has no glue in it. From my experience, 2:1 is just isn't as strong.

thanks.

yes i agree. this is the only one that i used the raychem stuff on and it seemed to work better as the large shrink from MDPC wouldnt slide over the connector and the jumbo shrink wouldnt get small enough.

the other ones, i used for a fan control switch and power cord before sleeving them.

does anyone know the type of solder they use on the back of the boards where the ports are mounted?
i tried heating it with my iron as well as a mini torch, but it wouldnt liquefy.
i was originally trying to remove the ports and individually sleeve them then remount them.
i am also having the same problem with a nonmodular power supply and trying to desolder the wires. any ideas? maybe i need a higher wattage iron?

thanks for the help!!

Desoldering is something that takes practice. You need to make sure the tip of your iron isn't oxidised, you need flux to help the solder flow, and you need something for the excess solder to flow into, like copper desoldering braid.

I use a regular desoldering iron with a built in squeeze bulb for removing solder from IC's and other small connections. Doesn't work well with blobs of solder on wire though. You can go to probably Radio Shack and get a squeeze bulb to vacuum the excess solder after heating.
