can i replace an odd for a hdd/ssd?

ok so my sister(11 year old) has a laptop an shes ****ed the power ports on it, which means i had to open it up an replace the port. after opening it up i noticed the sata port for the odd and the sata port for the hdd are different. however they both connect to the motherboard using a white cable. which got me thinking. would i be able to remove the odd buy a sata port from eBay and put an extra hdd into the laptop or even add an ssd to give the laptop a new boost of life?
this is probably insane and wont work, i searched the forums and couldn't find anywhere if it was possible so what do you guys think?

What laptop is it? You can generally buy an assembly that will fit a 2.5hdd in and then sit in the optical drive bay.

Just confirm the ODD is SATA as well.

Also, some laptops use a caddy for their HDD/ODD so it may not look like a SATA because they used a removable adapter.

You can find the adapters for $20 or less:

What's the laptop's make and model? There are 2 different thicknesses for the optical drive bay - 9.5mm (called "dv22") or 12.7mm (called "dv25"). Just be sure to get the right one, you can Google around to see what thickness your laptop uses.
