The insane vitual-reality headset we previewed at E3 has been suped up into a fancier model called the Oculus Rift, where it's taken to Kickstarter.
The crowdsourcing is to fund the production of more units and get them in the hands of developers as soon as possible. Creator Palmer Luckey aims to make it the first affordable "truly immersive virtual reality headset for video games."

This is quite interesting and already passed the 400K mark (150k more then the goal),I would guess that you will only see this in stores around 2014, if everything goes right. My only concern would be the density of this panels, that close to the eye you need a very high density panel.

This will be absolutely fanastic with simulation racing titles such as Project CARS. Imagine racing with the Oculus and moving your head/POV in real time in this cockpit:

While I agree that the 1280x800 sounds a bit low (1080p would sound a lot better rolleyes.gif) its very loosely connected to the fact that the monitors are close to they eyes. Human eyes have a hard time trying to focus on something that is right in front of them so I suspect they are using optics to create the illusion of a bigger screen that is further away. This will also make it harder to notice the low resolution.
