Building a table for my tower

Thread Starter
I want to build a table for my PC tower. Right now the tower's in the floor under the desk and it's all up in my footspace. My thought was to take our coffee table (though a cheap one, as seen here: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Parsons-Coffee-Table-Black/16451430 ), run two 2x4s down the length of it, then probably knock the legs off and use 4 2x4 pieces to make new legs as well as adding two more legs in the center. I would also be using decking screws as they're quite secure. I'm fairly confident it would work, but I thought I would turn to the more crafty minds of OCN to make sure I wasn't overlooking something.

are you just trying to get the tower off the floor, or are you intending to convert this to a table/desk for your monitor and other goodies as well?

As a short stand (say 12" legs) would you said should be fine, but then why cut it up at all? As a full size desk (typically 28" legs) I would be really concerned about wobble. You'll probably need cross bracing (width wise) as well as the lateral you mentioned. L brackets on the legs might work.

That coffee table may not be the best choice, website states its a hollow core. Too much weight and the surface will collapse.

You might want to consider spending $50 and getting a solid core exterior door from home depot. They're 30" deep, 80" (6'8") long and you can cut it to a shorter length if you want. This is what I ended up doing for my eyefinity command station, currently under construction. I left mine full length tho.

I did this to some time ago. I just bought a cheap, small table(just the right size for my case) at IKEA and mounted some casters on the legs, because my case is kinda heavy tongue.gif It cant get much simpler than this.

Yeah it's just to bring it off the floor. I've already got a desk. Right now with where the tower's at it's all the way under the desk and it makes it impossible to use the USB ports and headphone jack. It would just sit next to the desk and have the tower on it, nothing more. I actually got to looking at the table I have now and it's not sturdy at all. I do have some 2x4s laying around. Maybe I can make a table out of that. I'll browse Ikea too. Thanks for the input guys

I looked at it and I think it would work well. My only decision would be, do I order it online and pay $20 for shipping or do I drive to Atlanta (3 hours) to get one? Don't have an Ikea close by frown.gif I did find this: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10198411/ Might be worth it since I could roll the PC if needed. Still, $20 shipping makes that one $55. Might be worth it though

I looked at getting a galant a while back, shipping was $350 so $20 isn't that bad. I wouldn't get that thing, but 20 bones for shipping has got to be less than gas to and from atlanta. If all you want is a cube with casters, just build one. Shouldn't take to long and will cost less than $50, plus you can stain or paint it whatever color you want. Also, that link you provided probably wouldn't be suitable for your tower, check the dimensions and measure your tower thumb.gif

Thankfully the feet are closer to the middle, so it takes around 3 inches off each side. I am considering getting a sheet of MDF (?) and using a couple 2x4s I have. That would probably be much simpler. Build one it is! Thanks for all the input

Only reason i got the lack table was because i was in Texas visiting family and theres an ikea like 10 minutes away and i got the table for 8 bucks. Im going down there again on the 9th and might buy a galant if they have one in the used section. If they do ive seen them there for 35 bucks. Shipping is insane for that thing.
