Well then, try to get him into a GTX 660TI or at worst a GTX 570. I don't know what an amd equivalent would be, because i personally don't pay attention to anything but their mobile cards. So sorry i cant be of more help. the heart of a gaming computer is a GPU, I don't know why he would want to skimp on the GPU. but to each his own.
I think any of the configurations recommended in this thread along with a change in care would be worth it.

I feel like i am not the only one pushing it....

this build will play wow max ofc and most of games out there also max the 660Ti is amazing performer
u can still tweek this build and make it cheaper like Power supply , Ram, SSD and cpu these 4 i kind of chosen them little higher then ur bro requirements for future needs for games and Mist of pandarian require more then Cataclysm
i also did on cyber power awesome build
http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/system/Gamer_Xtreme_1000_SE/
with sabertooth mobo and ocz SSD also Ram corsair 8GB 1600mhz
with 660ti evga superclocked = total 1414$

how much slower is a 660ti when compared to a 670?

yes the difrence between 660Ti and 670 is not much, it always like that between 660-670 or 670-680 , but its buge leap in price,

so i think both will be in ur friend budget

If you are going high resolution then I suggest you get the 670. The 660 is pretty much a castrated version of the 670 in terms of memory bandwidth.

Just to cut through all the pre built hate, most sites that pre build PCs & have been around for awhile will do the job for your friend fine. I ordered my sig PC through cyberpowerpc (although I have extensively changed it since then) & have had no problems whatsoever. The main thing with these pre built sites is to spec the parts out yourself since they tend to skimp on them in their pre configured rigs. If you select all high quality components then build quality is the only thing to worry about. Which IMO is not a huge concern cause these companies are in it to make money & want a good reputation. Not to say you can not get a badly built PC from any of them but that is the minority.

Now with that said I would recommend trying to talk your friend into letting you build one for him. I do not regret buying pre built but would've preferred building it myself, I just do not have time for that due to my job though. Another option would be to have him order a bare bones PC from somewhere & then build from there. Also gotta remember, the pre built sites get such a bad rap because the only people who take the time to write a review is people who have had issues with their PCs, which 9 times out of 10 is a problem they caused themselves anyways. I mean think about it when is the last time you wrote a review on something that worked as expected but did not over/under perform? I know personally the only time I write reviews is when something falls short of or exceeds my expectations.

In closing, pre built is fine if you are somewhat knowledgeable about building PCs, do your research into the components you want, & configure all the components yourself. So if he absolutely will not let you build one for him, specing one out for him on a pre-built site is a viable option. As far as recommending one goes I'd ask around some more for other user experiences. While the PC i got from cyberpowerPC was built properly & has had no issues I was not to thrilled with their customer service & do not intend on using the warranty unless my whole PC goes up in flames! puke.gif So I can not recommend them in good faith. I really just wanted to stress the point that while building yourself is always the best & most cost efficient route, pre built sites are a viable option that get a largely unwarranted bad rap.
