My Take: I'm pretty sure this is nothing that's new, but I figure that it maybe of consideration to some folks to know what's going down with some of these coolers. It's pretty cool news to me tongue.gifbadpunisbad

world's first heatpipe heatsink

While the article is pretty nifty and I like seeing something still happening with air coolers, I'm really curious as to how heatsinks worked before heatpipes @_@

Heatsinks always worked before heatpipes, they were made of solid copper or other material that transferred the heat to fins usually cooled by fans. thumb.gif

Here's a Heatpipe heatsink (Xigmatek Loki, Gaia and Aegir):

And here's a regular non heatpiped heatsink (Zalman 'Flower' fanless):

Zalman_heat_sink.jpg

and here's an old P4 cooler (heatpipeless)

Heatpipes and Vapor Chamber coolers are different.

Heatpipes have pipes that run through a solid block of metal at the base, while a vapor chamber actually has a thin, 2d heatpipe that functions as the base. So in a vapor chamber system, the base itself has a capillary cooling system.

I know.... (especially since I'm the OP that posted the vapor chamber article...) I was explaining to sir broseph up there how heatsinks worked before heatpipes. Not on the difference between vapor chambers and heatpipes.

But I'm nearly 100% certain it's not 2D essentially being that any physical object in our world is 3 dimensional. An image on paper is 2D, a vapor chamber is 3D otherwise it could not contain vapor.

Vapor chambers are more like a type of heat pipe.... they are not that much different and use the same principals.

Heatsinks STILL work fine without heatpipes. The vast majority of OEM heatsinks do not have heatpipes. And you can still buy retail heatsinks without heatpipes. All motherboards are still designed with this style of heatsink in mind. Because they blow the air down onto the cpu, and then out in all directions around the cpu. Motherboard designs often rely on this to cool the components around the heatsink (VRM's, northbridge, ram, other). Heatpipe tower coolers usually eliminate this effect, which is fine for the cpu, but can be a detriment to those other components.

It's "regular" because there is no heatpipes in it. It's not as regular as a stock HSF from Intel or AMD, but who cares? I was trying to illustrate a fanless heatsink (the flower came to mind nearly instantly) to drive home my point that heatpipes are not necessary for cooling, and that Heatsinks can be so efficient that they do not always require a fan to operate.

Seriously, what the hell is with everyone with taking everything I say out of context?
