[Phoronix] Valve's L4D2 Is Faster On Linux Than Windows - Page 11

OK. Now they need to include a mini distro of linux with each game, tweaked for performance and with the latest drivers already installed. Bootable ISO from a flash drive... instant gameplay. No installs! Make it happen Valve!

Anyone can make it happen at any point in time, that's the beauty of open source. There are Linux apps that can make you a custom distro with all of your favorite apps pre installed and up to date as well as your drivers.

openGL has always been much better than directX in almost every way.

Good that a major gaming company is finally starting to investigate its use and circumvent the mediocrity that is DirectX.

Not always, and not in every way.

There is a reason that OpenGL fell behind; the big one being that it's development nearly stalled for a good while. I can't for the life of me remember why, though.

OGL tends to have advances sooner but it's messier.

Ummm Last time I benchmarked L4D2 My minimum frame rate was something ridiculous like 250 fps... So unless we start regularly gaming on 300hz monitors this really isn't going to matter much.

Also since source games aren't my primary taste in gaming until the 193 games I have get ported over to linux from DX 9 and 11 to OGL I wont be switching OSes.

Although... Im happy for you gamers on linux that get to play a game Ive been playing for years! Cheers to you guys! thumb.gif

Not really. It lagged behind for many years. The last few years have been good to OpenGL though, with many platforms using it and doing so very successfully, like iOS and Android.

I recall something about differences of opinion in regards to priorities and the direction OpenGL should go as well as rifts between the developers (Khronos Group). They weren't giving game developers the features they wanted. Course that's all changed now.

This could be thing that transitions Linux to the top, it would take steam trying to push for it and windows 8 to be rubbish. It would take a miracle but that could be incredible. If you have a web browser, a good office package, and gaming you have the best kind of desktop PC for home use.
Bring it on!

I know, and I hope so, Linux definitely deserves more credit than it gets and I would love to see it rise higher in the ranks and possibly to the top! biggrin.gif
