Because they're expanding to Linux? rolleyes.gif

?

Anyways, this is great news! What would make it even better is if they would release HL3 with the Linux version. That would probably be the only thing big enough to really make Linux gaming a formidable foe to Windows.

Good, because every time I've seen you trash talk OpenGL it's with ill informed arguments that got jumped on by like 5 people in at least one topic. tongue.gif

Also I think us Bulldozer users will see a much smaller bottleneck with CFX setups in Linux, as the kernel handles the 8150 better than the windows 7 kernel from what I hear.

Because your opinion clearly matches everyone elses. wink.gif

And the bottleneck in dual GPU setups isn't the CPU for AMD (Well, most of it, anyway), there's something else causing it because going to a faster CPU doesn't completely alleviate it in a way that would point to it being only a CPU bottleneck, I have a feeling it's the HT Link to the CPU speed.

Nope, OpenGL is equivilant to DX9 at best....

OpenGL was more advanced than DX was for a long time, DX is only catching up now OpenGL isn't used as much for games; for example OpenGL had tessellation way before DX.

Someone probably could make something that looks nearly as good as Crysis on DX7 if they really wanted to with enough time and patience, or they could remake Minecraft using DX11; DX version doesn't mean crap with how good graphics look, it usually means easier coding and some additional features these days, or plain optimisations in DX10s case.

^This. Open GL can look every bit as good as DX11. But the reason almost no one uses it is the same why we are still stuck with DX9 games instead of moving to full DX10 only. Developers are stuck using the same old console API's that then get badly ported to the PC. Another big reason is that now days a lot of games are made with UDK and that's a directX engine.

Wrong, the main reason is that MS led people to believe that OpenGL wasn't being really allowed with decent performance in Vista/7, the PS3 and Wii actually use versions of OpenGL iirc.

True they have, I was just showing that DirectX was already the primary API before xbox was even out.

I read up on this a little, kind of interesting that Microsoft intended Directx to be addative to OpenGL, not a competitor.

DX was only primary after the Xbox and some Vista FUD, most games back before the Xbox (Even up until the middle of its life time) had a DX version or OpenGL version.

That just means anyone running Fedora, etc will have to do a bit more work to get it to work properly at first.

Somewhat, it's also that Linux is just more efficient than Windows; even Linux in a VM folding on a CPU is faster than native Windows.

Unigine is by far the best looking engine I have seen with Cryengine in a close second. Unigine is also FAR less CPU dependent than Cryengine is.

And it supports linux thumb.gif
