Pretty sure nobodies system here averages 300 fps on the source engine and if they say it does it's a lie. Even on my system with all settings maxed on source games I don't get a constant 300 fps (which is what you would need to average 300 fps). I'm usually in the 150-250 fps range with some spikes up in the 300 fps range depending on whats going on. I'm mainly referring to L4D2 and TF2, I guess CS:S could be a higher average, but still don't think anyone is averaging 300 fps.

If the Xbox consoles didn't use DirectX it would probably be gone by now, there's no reason for a developer making multi-platform games to use DirectX unless one of those platforms in the Xbox, because the other 5+ platforms they might make the game run on can run OpenGL. DirectX is actually quite nice to use, however since it's proprietary it is much less valuable. Just like PhysX on GPU, a lot of developers don't waste their time with something that 5% of their consumer base will see (40% of PCs, and PCs are about 10-15% of multiplatform sales).

I would agree with you but DirectX came out in 1995. We were rocking DX7 games in 1999. The first Xbox didn't come out until 2001, by then DirectX had already pretty much became the standard.

In CSS you have to change FPS_Max to get higher than 300fps by default. I can tell you my system easily averages 300fps in css. L4D2 might be a different story, I don't play it much.

If Valve pushes game developers to start releasing for the Linux crowd I think we'll see plenty of more PC gamers moving over to Linux. The thing I've found is that PC gamers tend to want to learn more about PCs than people who are not PC gamers, for obvious reasons. PC gaming takes some troubleshooting now and then, and while it seems like common sense to most of us here on OCN, many get frustrated by that.

Aero is disabled during gaming.
Processes in RAM do not affect gaming at all if there is sufficient RAM.
There system (like most systems) was not CPU-bound.

Aero is disabled for fullscreen apps. I do not think Aero is necessarily disabled for games that are run in windowed or windowed borderless mode.

Correct.... but I would assume these test and most users run in full-screen mode.

I wonder how this is going to effect emulators, as I know they could use any extra performance you can get out of system. Of course they did use a stock system, overclock the sucker and see how fast it goes haha

Long story short, times have changed.

Linux is already the King OS for emulators. Look at how many emulators there are! There is an SNES one that lets you play 2 player over the internet. thumb.gif
