This is pretty awesome. I'm not really surprised though. Linux is built from the ground up on optimizations and server applications. Efficiency has always been a priority for Linux. It's good to see that they are starting to conquer the OpenGL portion of the OS.

True they have, I was just showing that DirectX was already the primary API before xbox was even out.

I read up on this a little, kind of interesting that Microsoft intended Directx to be addative to OpenGL, not a competitor.

In case anyone is wondering about the image quality difference:

Q:

What about image quality? Is it in pair with Windows and Direct3D? Open source drivers on linux are a lot behind when it comes to OpenGL features support if I recall, closed source drivers are much better, at least Nvidia chips that I use to buy. Can we expect to have the same level of details and eye candy under Linux when running on Intel/Nvidia/Amd chips?

A:

The image quality equals that seen on Windows with Direct3D.

That was posted in the blog comments.

Does that question even have to be asked!?

I call that case and point. That's what you expect to be able to do in linux, windows, and OSX. Ironically all can be done with OGL, weird isn't it?

Some people voiced their concern about imagine quality here I believe.

I want the openGL renderer as an option on Windows.

I'm usually in the 150-250 fps range with some spikes up in the 300 fps range depending on whats going on. I'm mainly referring to L4D2 and TF2, I guess CS:S could be a higher average, but still don't think anyone is averaging 300 fps.

My system used to average 700 fps on CS source a couple years ago. I could hit 1000 or "1ms" if I disabled a bit more rendering.

Hardware: 5850 i7920.

Yeah, I could have been a dick and just said image quality itself doesn't depend on the operating system. It more or less depends on the quality of images used by the game developer. I could have then gone into saying that if your worried about nice pretty effects why don't you try out the Haven benchmark. wink.gif Really, image quality? Bah, that's always been dependent on the source. It's the effects you really pine over.
