Artisan mousepads- standard vs. VE versions

I decided to try out some Artisan mousepads as it seems that my Naga Hex is very picky about what surface I use it on. My Talents are great pads, but the Naga wouldn't work on the white at all, and the regular version it works ok, but my Spawn and Xornet work better on the white. I picked up the Hien VE in Navy blue and the Shiden VE in white. The Hein VE I'm just not impressed with. I expected the material on the surface to be denser and rougher. It feels kinda weird, and it does have a bit of friction but my mouse glides over much easier than I was expecting. I think this material would be much better with a hard base rather than the pliable material on the VE. The Shiden however, I love. It's slick, but has great control, and all of my mice track great on it. Very comfy on the wrist too. So my question is, how is the quality of the VE version compared to the regular version? The VE is VERY thin (just a bit thicker than my QcK+) and I think I might want to try the mid version as I find these just a bit too soft. And how does the Shiden compare to the Shiden-Kai? I might give that one a try as well. Thanks for the input!
