Edit: I just noticed that the G.Skill Trident set is 4GB in total. People recommended me going with 8 GB because RAM is cheap.

Good catch. Definitely go with an 8gb set. I thought I had bought one of the cheapest 8gb sets that were still 1600 when I made my original post. Also when it comes to gaming 4gb is just not cutting it anymore. I've held out as long as pretty much could with my 4gb and the GW2 Beta weekend showed me I needed more RAM. That game alone took up over 2gb of RAM and I had to go through my task manager shutting down all unnecessary processes so I could free up some memory. This has occasionally happened with BFBC2 and I believe BF3 uses up even more RAM so 8gb is pretty much standard now. Unfortunately.

The amplifier only works so long as he has a high quality pair of head phones that actually need an amplifier. I have a xonar essence XST card and two headsets. One is a set of the razer carcharias (or however you spell that ) and the other is a set of AKG Q701's. If I plug both headsets into my maximus v gene they will sound great, but it is only when I plug in the q701's into the xonar card that I actually get a good bit of sound improvement.

You are right about the fact that the maximus gene v not having an amplifier though. I was under the impression that the gene had the supreme fx iv card, not the III version. My bad. The flip side to that argument though is that if the Op really needs a headphone amp, then I would probably suggest looking for an actual USB audio dac. There are a couple that are inexpensive and do a a surprisingly good job. If you spent the money on a high quality headset, then you should probably back it up with some quality hardware. That is just my opinion though.

I am not so sure about the 7.1 audio debate anymore. I used to be fairly convinced that no one would use 7.1, but now that razer has their Tiamat headphones that actually use the 7.1 audio jacks I am not so sure. So in some respects one could speculate that 7.1 audio might become more widely used in the future. thinking.gif

How do you figure that the black drive is faster? The seagate drive has higher areal density, lower average latency, and from what I can gather...it also has higher sustained transfer rates. Now maybe when you start looking at 3 and 4 TB drives the story might change, but from what I am reading on the spec sheets, the seagate drive seems faster. Feel free to prove me wrong though.

I'm pretty doubtful of what kind of quality those so called 7.1 headsets are. Actually you don't really need high quality headphones. I have a pair of ATH-M40fs that were only $50 three years ago and they still see a solid boost when I go from on board to the headphone. So far I've used them with a P7P55D-E Pro and a Gigabyte P55-GD80 and neither of them have been able to push my head phones. Also these really aren't that great of head phones compared to others out there.

Well no wonder YOU need an amp. Your impedance rating is 60 ohms.

Look, the higher impedance you have the more power you will need to drive them. There is a reason that PC gaming headphones have a low impedance and that is so that they can sound great on a normal sound card. Mobo manufactures have figured this out and have tried to optimize their boards for this.

Seriously, my whole library is in FLAC, I have a higher end headphones, and the proper amplifier to drive them. I only see an upwards of a 10 percent real world difference from using my sound system compared on onboard 5.1 audio on the on board sound card of our media PC downstairs which is using a H61 mobo and my cheap razer headset. One cost me close to 1000 bucks and the other was 50. It is mainly due to the fact that I am trying to chase a tiny bit more sensitivity and a quieter sound stage.

let me put it this way. If the headset has an impedance rating of 0-35 ohms stick with on board sound. If your really want better sound, get the maximus v gene...at least you will get a better mobo out of the deal. If your impedance rating is closer to 60 ohms and you spent a good bit of money on them, please get a dedicated amp.

As for the razer headset specs

They actually seem to have more than 2 drivers (which is impressive consider most companies try to BS their way into 7.1 audio with only 2 drivers), the usb line along with the weird little control panel hints at a built in amplifier.

But i'll upgrade to Sennheiser HD555 someday.

For sli, you should get a pcie 3.0 motherboard. You could get the p8z68 deluxe for $100, it's cheaper than the z77 motherboard, and almost exactly the same. For the power supply, you could get a seasonic x650 for about the same price, it'll be better quality and more efficient, but the one you have is fine if you don't want to switch. And like other people are saying, you should change the ram to ripjaws x, the newer version of ripjaws; I got the 1600mhz 1.35v ripjaws x, but you can also get it in 1.25v sniper, depending on what looks better with your build. For the hard drive, seagate drives are faster, cheaper, and quieter than western digital, so you should definately get the seagate st1000dm003, or you could get the mushkin enhanced chronos 120gb for about the same price if you don't need the extra storage space. You should still get the haf x and noctua d14, they will last a long time, so it's better to spend more money on them, it'll be worth it. Your build has definitely improved since the first time though.
