Cant decide between a new build or upgrading components - help! - Page 2

I dont know why you would want to upgrade, your rig can still max out anything.

If you want to waste money for a few more fps, you can replace the 5870 xfire with a Sapphire HD7970 6GB

this compares the 7970 against 5970 which is like xfire 5870

Yeah, I just got a raise at work and a small bonus came with it so I had money burning in my pocket. I OCed last night and I'll mess around with it some more this weekend. Definitely not going to buy anything now.

I know the Nh-D14 is an excellent air cooler but have you thought about getting a custom loop? With it you should be able to Oc your i7 to about 4.2-4.4ghz and hold of to Haswell then re-use your loop and add waterblocks to your new gpus. This said, an OCN member "Stren" is doing a CPU roundup so you should check it out, I would recommend makind a new thread so that we all can help you build a nice future proof waterloop for under $500 that you can re-use for next gen CPUs and beyond.

Edit:

I might do that. I took the time today to completely clean the inside of my case - hitting everything with a dust can. After it was cleaned I knocked off 14 degrees C while running prime95. I'm hitting about 72 at max for 3.8Ghz. I was also able to get my RAM up to 1600mhz.
