Use mint to backup files of an infected windows 7 drive?

my in-law got my other rig infected. It keeps restarting after booting to windows.
Can I use my HDD with mint debian to retrieve and clean important documents?
after that ill do a format and clean install of win7.
The infected rig is "gamay" in my sig.

Yes. Just run Avast! or some other A/V from Linux on the infected drive and see if that helps for the time being tongue.gif

Generally you can just do a clean windows install over the old one, and keep all your files.
*Just make sure to scan all your files if you do it this way*

Should work, as long as you aren't backing up the infected files along with them thumb.gif

When my dad's computer got hit with malware, I used Ubuntu on an older machine to Dropbox all the important documents/pictures he had, put the drive back in his computer, reformatted, and re-downloaded the files from Dropbox

Yeah but code still needs to be ran. Generally the computer doesn't randomly run things out of windows.old unless you tell it too. I guess if the virus works off an exploit that's found when the computer reads file info... Doubt it, usually this works fine and then you can just scan windows.old so... Even so, backing up the data is probably going to bring the virus on the backup as usually it's personal data that has the virus. Unless it's a browser exploit, still takes a chance backing up the data. =S That's the conundrum, personally infected data that needs to be retrieved.

id rather just copy the important documents (probably less than 500mb size)
then format the drive and do clean install.



Is it possible to mount both mint and windows 7 on a usb?
I have an 8gb usb stick, it would be a waste of time to create a bootable usb with Mint, then replace that with windows 7 bootable.

It would be a waste of time partitioning and setting up grub on a usb when you can create a bootable usb with Mint, then replace that with windows 7 bootable.

my files disappeared! help

I inserted the usb stick with mint installer.
Booted mint and copied files to the mint desktop.

After that I shutdown and plugged in the mint usb to my other rig.
There are no new files in the usb stick so I plugged it back again on the infected rig.

Booted mint installer again but this time the copied files on the desktop are gone

I believe you are using a live USB, when you shut down it doesn't save anything to the USB as it doesn't have persistent memory (I think it is all in the RAM?), so you would need to get another USB stick or hdd etc and save the files to that while using the mint live USB.
