GTX 660m with i7 vs 670m with i5

post #1 of 13
Thread Starter
Alright I'm about to pull the trigger on my first gaming laptop. Essentially I do some gaming, some video editing while on the road (go-pro ski videos), and a lot of school work / research papers.

I'm replacing my desktop and not getting another one so this needs to be able to handle Diablo III, BF3, GW2 (in a few weeks), and SC2.

My question to OCN laptop gurus:
I'm debating between a Sager NP6370 with an i7-3610QM Processor ( 6MB L3 Cache, 2.30GHz) paired with a 17.3" screen and a GTX 660m for $1,129.00 shipped

versus

Sager NP9130 with i5-3210M Processor ( 3MB L3 Cache, 2.50GHz) paired with a GTX 670M and a 15.6" screen for $1,179.00 shipped.

I can't decide I need help! I'm a desktop nut, but I know very little about laptops. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd go for the i7 + 660m. From what I remember reading, the 660 is only like 10% slower than a 670. That's just me though. I'd personally go for the i7 if I was getting a laptop, plus its 50 bucks cheaper than the i5 one lol. You could use that money to buy a box of cookies haha.

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/eurocom-racer-geforce-gtx-660m-benchmark,3257-8.html

Here is a comparison of GTX 660M , GTX 675M and HD 6990M. In demanding games like Metro 2033 the GTX 675M is atleast 25% faster than GTX 660M. If you play demanding games like BF3, Crysis 2 the GTX 675M will be the better option. GTX 670M is a crippled GTX 675M with a 192 bit memory bus. So I would advise a GTX 675M as a minimum.

660m = 28nm Keplar (about 10% slower than the 670m, but uses 50% less power)
670m = 570m 40nm fermi with minor overclock.

I assume the 660M will run a 1080p screen, and the 670M something lower? Or are they both 1920x1080? I vote for the i7 + 660M either way.

An i7 will retain more value if you ever want to sell it as well.

It will run 1920x1080 on both screens but when at home I"ll have it hooked up to my 22" monitor running 1920x1080.

Thanks!
