Looking for Thoughts on a Noob WC Rig

Thread Starter
I've been running my AMD Phenom II 965 BE at 4.1 Ghz stable since early February. It does get really hot during Prime95 and I've been wanting to play around with Water Cooling my rig for a few months. The current plan is to purchase the XSPC Raystorm block, XSPC EX360 radiator, and the XSPC reservoir/pump combo at Jab-tech and just cool my cpu since I currently have an MSI 550gsx ti Fermi and can't seem to find any blocks to put that on the loop also. I'm currently using a Thermaltake MK-1 Chaser case which I purchased because I could mount a 240mm radiator with no issues. I have a few questions:

1. If I'm only cooling my processor do I really need a 360mm radiator or could I use a 240mm and add a 120 when the time comes to cool other components? The 360 will fit in my case but it's not going to look pretty and it's going to be a tight fit.

2. Have you guys ever heard of anyone water cooling a 550gsx and if so did they just use a universal block?

Would really love some input on these since I'm having a hard time deciding what to do with my loop.

If you can make a 360mm radiator fit I would go for that. You then have room for expansion. There is no such thing as overkill when it comes to watercooling. This is OCN after all thumb.gif

A 240 will be sufficient to cool your CPU alone without any problem. I don't think I've ever heard of a 550gsx, so maybe you mean gtx? Double check and let us know. Though to be honest I've never heard of a waterblock for the gtx 550, it is a lower end card, furthermore it wouldn't be worth it to watercool it tbh. You'd be better off saving that money towards buying a new gpu in the future.

yeah it's a gtx. I've got it OC'd to about 1.1 ghz atm so I wasn't sure if I should consider water cooling it also.

I had another question that just came to mind. If i use the 360 radiator and 3 120mm fans to push the air would that cause any problems or possible positive/negative pressure inside my case since I currently have dual 200mm fans pulling in, dual 200's pushing out, and the 140 out to compensate for my psu?

I'm thinking I might get the 360 just for future proofing my system a bit.

I have everything you listed, (Raystorm, EX360, XSPC Res/Pump Top) It's great. Using it as just a CPU loop untill I get universals for my 580's. I def wouldn't WC a GTX 550, lol.

Fan wise, I think it'll fit in just fine, Intaking cool air through the front and you can push that right out the top via the 3 120mm fans on the rad. If that's what you are planning. I went with Bgears B-Blasters for my EX360 they are doing great.

- Buy a DDC pump from OCN bmaverick here for $35. Working great for me.

You can get away with the 240 for just the CPU, but as the 360 is not much more expensive, you would be better off with it as it will allow you more headroom and easier expansion in the future, as well as taking advantage of the space provided.
