HD7950 Twin Frozr III running hot.

Hey guys, just recieved my upgrade card an I'm a bit worried. Decided to post here before going forward with the RMA.

HD7950 (7970 pcb) Twin Frozr III, idle temps are ~46*c w/ 46% fans, load temps are insanely huge. 85*c on skyrim w/ fans @ 85%, same w/ bf3, same w/ fifa 12.... Im guessing bad thermal paste, but im sure that would void the warranty. Card hits 90*c within 55 seconds of launching furmark w/ fans @ 100%.

Havent overclocked yet for obvious reasons. Is this normal or am I just paranoid? Tried 12.6 and 12.7 beta drivers, same issue.

IF it doesn't void the warranty try reseating the heatsink.

these are high temps, but what is the ambient temp where the PC is located?

I'd say rma time, I don't know how MSI treats replacing the cooler by yourself , like how xfx is, that you just have to send it back with the stock cooler for rma thumb.gif

as others have said your temps are somewhat dangerously high... that being said, your room temp is very warm. my guess is your 46 C idle temp would be much less, although the load temps are what will cause the damage. RMA is probably the safe bet, just dont do anything to void your warrantee at this point.

If you want to give it a try you could remove the heatsink cooler, clean the chip and reapply some high quality thermal paste like Arctic Silver 5 and fix the cooler back. It might just be worth the effort before sending back for RMA.

not sure if MSI voids the warranty if you reapply the compound. thats what I want to do, i got some AS5 and thermalright compounds laying around alond w/ arcti clean products, so i could clean it up BUT if it doesn't help and it voids the warranty ill have a 300 dollar paper weight.

edit: moved the card to anothe pcie slot to see if better cooler clearance would have a better result. it did not, same shenanigans ensued.

If things don't work you are going to send the card back with the stock cooler . so that should not void any warranty.
