It's the 2308. I flashed the firmware for the 2308 to the chip from LSI web site. I think they may have made a typo when writing the meta data.

Benching on the same drives that you're using for Windows does cause reduced numbers, but it shouldn't be anywhere near this bad. Does anyone know if LSI and Asrock have started talking about this with each other or is it just a blame-game right now?

Atleast I know now my particular chip isn't bad. Some sort of design/software problem with this MB/chip. It's #1 selling point isn't turning out too good unless thry fix this.

Our 4k-64Thrd numbers are abysmal. The LSI chip isn't handling queue depth properly.

ASRock still hasn't gotten back to me yet now day 3. Maybe next week.

So I put Win 7 on a WD 10K Raptor on the Intel X79 port so that I can freely change the 8x Vertex 4 LSI RAID setup.

This is what I get when using the LSI hardware RAID with boot-up config utiliity (not selected as a boot device and no Windows installed):

Performance is pretty much as poor as ever.



Now for what I get when the drives are seperate volumes and loaded into Win 7 as JBOD and software stripe:

So obviously there has to be something wrong with the LSI hardware RAID as especially those 4K numbers with 64 queue depth are just horrible (less speed than a single drive).

Thoughts on what can be wrong with the LSI hardware RAID? Both tests are obviously with the same LSI chip, drives and firmware, so not sure why the large difference.

FYI, I checked both of the "OMG do NOT check this--you are SO gonna lose data" options, one in the device (flushing off) and one in the megaraid util (caching enabled). I did get about half again as much perf on the 64-thread 4k writes. This is almost entirely for gaming, and it's going to have daily backups, so I may just leave it in "OMG dangerous" mode and deal with disaster if it comes.

By the way, I'm seeing 10% variation in the results, easily. More than I'd expect with solid state storage. Maybe I'm wrong, but I wonder if Win7 is still breaking itself in in the background, e.g. indexing and other caching busywork. Have you tried turning all of that stuff off, e.g. superfetch, indexing, offline files, etc.?
