I just fell in love with silence...

Not a long post, just a testimonial of how awesome silence is when you experience it for the first time!

Basically, I used to run all my fans at max speed with the GPU on a very aggressive fan curve to even keep it under 40C at idle. Yesterday, I was bored so I decided to see if running all my case fans on low would make a difference. Of course, there was a lot less noise but my temps weren't really higher! redface.gif I simply couldn't believe it... Now, I'm running all of them at low, my Corsair H60 stock fan is off and only starts if the CPU gets over 75C. It's not passive though because I have the stock rear fan still pulling cool air from the back at low speed and so far, even after a 15 minutes Prime95 test run, the Corsair fan didn't start a single time with my signature overclock. My GPU now keeps the fan at 40% until the temperature reaches 50C since that never happens unless I'm gaming/folding and if I'm doing these things I either wear closed headphones or I'm not on my computer. So far, my GPU temps stayed at about 75C playing GTA IV but that's pretty normal since after 50C, the fan curve is the same. I simply can't believe how small the difference in temperature was compared to the noise reduction...

If you guys have not tried yet, you should just turn down your fans... and enjoy the sound of silence! smile.gif

I wear headphones every time i use my computer so i dont hear my fan's or my fans ;3

I removed a bunch of fans from my computer including not having any side fans at all anymore. My temps are also the same and I am enjoying it being alot quieter also.

I still want to watercool my next rig for complete silence

yea I realized that after my post, since i've never built a WC system yet. Iwas too lazy to edit thumb.gif

how do you go about getting complete silence then, is LN2 the only option [freeze that bad boy?]

Well, you can use some very low RPM fans with thick, low FPI radiators. Also, SSDs. Before, I didn't care about my HDD but now, it's the only thing I hear... Also, larger fans can move more air with less motor noise so that's a good option. Also, if you really want total silence, you can but you can get a huge radiator like a 9x120mm and put it in a rad box with a pump or too and then put that rad box in another room.

see that sounds really expensive, and you gotta decide whats worth it in the end I have no idea what a full WC setup for say a z77/ivy/kepler would cost but i'd imagine I could just get another 670 and yea it would be loud but i'd have two video cards instead of one.

So I don't know if i'll ever watercool. I am thinking now about removing my front two intake 120MM and only having PSU/GPU//HS-FAN/1X top 120MM/1x 80MM rear fans.

I have unplugged them before to check temps and I don't remember it being more than 2-3c difference and would probably drop noise down.

you could just have passive air cooling, or put your computer in a freezer and route the cables out of it.

Yes, a silent computer is a beautiful thing. It's also a difficult challenge because temps usually suffer with attempts to make the computer quieter. I sleep about 4ft away from my pc so I've been trying everything to keep the noise down.

I'm pretty convinced I can build a near silent performance pc if I had the money. I would get a massive radiator with very low rpm fans to cool the cpu and gpu, encase the pump in a noise dampened box, buy a case with almost no holes in the panels and cover it in noise dampening material except for an exhaust fan to help keep the mobo and ram cool, and use only ssd's. Now that I think about it I would use the fans on the rad to also vent the air out of the case. I would get those non-click noctua 140mm fans with a fan controller.

Ahhh now all I need is to win the lottery...

Not sure where to start with this comment. 1. It's a topic thats been beaten to death. The compressor would die from the continuous heat load. and 2. It would be pretty loud since the compressor would be running at 100% all the time until it finally dies.

DUDE i like the freezer idea I have a little freezer I don't use I wonder if my case would fit in it. Also might cost a bit in electricity to run that freezer 24//7 and I'm not sure if the freezer its self like the compressor makes alot of noise. I could totally route the cable out the front of it and just seal it with ductape.

*gets out measuring tape*
