Reccomended PSU for new System

Hello,

I Will be building a new System that will have the following parts. And I have another question, allthough my main question is the power supply i should use.


Intel Clovertown or Intel Kentsfield Extreme K6700 or Q6700. Question here, are these both 4 core proccessors? Which one will give me more performance? Will they work with the Gigabyte DS3 Motherboard?

Gigabyte DS3 Motherboard.
4 x Team Xtreme DDR800 Ram, These have heatsinks on them. If i am to put 4 of them along side eachover on the slots will they fit or will the heatsinks get in the way of eachover and they wont fit?

2 x Barracuda ES 500gb hard drives.

Nvidia 8800GTX, The Watercooled version when it comes out.

I want to get the most performance out of my Video card and Proccessor. And i want to know how much power i will need to power my whole system.
I need the quietest possible PSU for my system.

1.) I think those are both quad-cores, but I'm not positive. No they won't work in that mobo, they will work in the Gigabyte DQ6, though.
2.) Yes all of your RAM will fit.

Well, I'm pretty sure you'll need a PC Power & Cooling Silncer 750W Power Supply or higher. Maybe even the 1000W version. Either way, I would go with the 1000W version if you've already spent that much on it.

That's 1 heck of a build. Look forward to seeing how it goes together, and welcome to the forums.

Clovertown and Kentsfield are both Quad-core. I can't wait to see this build either. Take pictures when you build it!

On Gigabytes website for the DS3 It says its quad core ready.
Why wouldnt a quad core work with it?

Ah I just found out that Clovertown uses the LGA 771 Socket for Server Computers.
Kentsfield then for me.

Back to my original Question, Keeping in mind my new system specs, mainly the 8800gtx and the Intel Quad Core Extreme K6700, What would be a suitable PSU?
I havent been able to find power consumption figuires for the K6700 at load, not the whole system, but the K6700 alone, same goes for the 8800GTX.

Clovertown is for servers.. same architecture, different socket. Server motherboards are generally not overclockable.

Thus, for us, the Kentsfield is generally the better choice.

Regarding PSU, if you plan a single 8800GTX, the PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750W is more than enough (nVidia recommends 450W for a single 8800GTX, but you build a bit more power hungry rig around it.)

My recommendation for SLI would indeed be that 1KW monster, or if you want to save some money, get the 750W Silencer and a FSP BoosterX for the second Video Card.

The GigaByte DS3 can handle the Kentsfield (QX6700) just fine. Just make sure yuo have the latest BIOS. See here:

Supports the QX6700 with BIOS F7 or later

Roughly, I think the QX6700 draws about 125W and the 8800GTX about 200-250W or so. That's of course at stock speeds. Since you plan water cooling, a couple of high-end hard drives and other stuff, it's good to have headroom.

PS: what is the K6700? Any link? The QX6700 is the Kentsfield as far I know

Well the Q6700 Draws around about 125w and plus the 250W for the Graphics card, that would be 375, Now i will be having watercooling, my pump only takes up 5w and 5w for the graphics card watercooling, so its 385 Watts, The hard drives consume 10 watts each, so 405 Watts, Now, The ram I think will consume around about 100 Watts Since I will have 4 x 1gb DDR800. Now all components will not be under 100% load at one time because when gaming the GPU is Stressed more than the CPU. and the other way around for say recompressing video's. So I think 500 Watts Should be sufficient given that im going to be running at stock speeds.

You should also take into account that 99.9% of PSUs are around 75-85% efficient. The general rule of thumb when it comes to PSUs is the more the better. Kinda hard for a system to function with a dead, weak, or stressing PSU.

You have to realize that most of all this power will have to come from the 12V rail. Thus, the current on the 12V rail is as important as the Wattage (if not more so).

And, these values are at stock settings. Once you start overclocking, power consumption will increase by a LOT (esp. CPU)

Thus, on the 12V rail we need the following (assuming stock, and high end estimates):
- Motherboard itself: 3A
- CPU: 10.5A (126W)
- RAM: 4A (48W; very high estimate; RAM does not need that much power)
- Video: 21A (252W)
- Watercooling: 1A (12W)
- Hard drives: 2A (24W)
- Optical Drive: 2A (24W a piece!)
- Case fans: 2A (Assuming two performance 120mm fans)
- Misc: 1A

Rough total 46.5A

Take in account headroom for aging of the PSU, and possible other events, and yuo easly exceed 50A. Thus, the PC Power & Cooling 610W (49A) would be the minimum to recommend.

Also, overclocking the CPU can easily DOUBLE the power draw! Thus, when you overclock it quite a bit, the power draw can easily hit 21A for the CPU, and the total will be 57A! Thus, even for the PC Power & Cooling 750W (60A on the 12V Rail) this will get a bit close. However, PC Power & Cooling is known for rating conservatively, so when they say 60A, it'll definately be 60A and likely a bit more.

I do realize I overestimated, since I rounded amps up, and some parts might draw less on the 12V rails (and more on other), but even if I am 5A off, then still we're looking at over 42.5A current on the 12V rails... That's already more that 500W on the 12V rails alone.

When you spend this much on a rig, the PSU is the last thing you want to save on. I'd rather drop 2GB RAM and get a good PSU than have 4GB (useless at the moment) RAM

Xaine: efficiency ratings have not really to do with this, since the Wattage rated is already at the DC side of things. Efficiency comes into play with the AC/DC conversion. For example, a 500W unit that is rated at 80% efficiency draws 500/0.80 = 625W from the AC power outlet when fully loaded (and of course, less when not fully loaded)

Well if i was to put it simply The OCZ GameXstream 700 WATT would hold that system togethe nicely.

The GameXStream delivers 50A on the 12V rails... Kinda tight.

I'd say the GameXStream 850W (when it is available) or the PC Power & Cooling 750W.

I mean, we're talking about a rig of several thousands of dollars... what is about $60 price differnce on a PSU ($140 for the GameXStream and $200 for the Silencer...).
