Easy or hard to get HTML jobs?

Thread Starter
I will be taking web design soon and I'm going to learn HTML programming. I dare say I'm a quick study and HTML is rumored to be one of the easiest languages. I already have two jobs lined up for family. One for the inlaws, one for my grandparents. But my question is, how hard is it going to be to find work after that? I'd like to be able to work from home and web page design is one of those jobs where that is certainly very doable. Thoughts?

i kno u need a master's for that but would assume after that shouldn't be too hard web sites for businesses

Yeah I'm just talking about small side jobs and such. Sort of drifting from one job to another. Not actually working for some big business full time. Many companies will hire programmers that don't even have a GED (cause they don't even ask) as long as they can program. High school students get jobs writing code. I'm just asking if the same thing is doable with HTML.

Harder than you think. It's so easy for freelancing and it's much much cheaper for bigger companies to hire indians for 1/10th of the price

I know this from experience. I'm certified in a lot of programming languages and was offered a position to work for the PHP development team before (it doesn't pay though)

So maybe I should start with stuff like... maybe putting up little signs around town? Or perhaps a phone book ad?

Just HTML? There really isn't any HTML jobs. I suggest you get familiar with more areas/languages of web development, client and server side to be able to provide a good, complete service.

In addition to HTML, at least read up on javascript, CSS and a server a side language like PHP, Perl, ASP, etc.

this. if you can grasp all these you can be quite competitive. if you have the ability to program your own CMS from scratch you are on the right track. just HTML is too specific and can only have so many applications

I wouldn't say its too specific, it just does not have enough capability without any accompanying languages (PHP, JavaScript, etc) to be worthwhile as its own job.

This.

With just HTML and CSS, you'll basically be able to take a designed web page, slice it and make it "somewhat" functional. You can possibly learn to integrate CMS's into web designs and not know PHP... but again, that only pays so much.

Most advertising for HTML you'd do around town would be to companies or small business or even individuals that don't know anything about the web and would want a website designed, too.

I had a friend that was really good with css/html and php. He never finished college and got a job some with a decent medical company doing web development. He made pretty good money I was surprised how quickly he got a job too. I have a BS in Info sciences and technology and a minor in Business. I learned programming in school (asp.net/html, java, javascript, vb.net, etc) and basically just applied for Developer positions.

It was tough, interviews that required hours of talking, some skills tests that you would never use on the job, and then more interviews. Took a couple months and finally landed a few jobs as a developer until the economy hit and then I had to find another job which is why I had to learn java, jsp, jsf..all stuff I never liked but now Im in a good position. My company will pay for my masters but I have to pay the school up front which I am having trouble doing at the moment.

So i guess to take away from this, if you do small side jobs and show it off, you can land a job with a decent place without eve a degree! That is how that friend found his job but it can be tough if you prefer one thing over the other and don't expand.
