I had a friend that was really good with css/html and php. He never finished college and got a job some with a decent medical company doing web development. He made pretty good money I was surprised how quickly he got a job too. I have a BS in Info sciences and technology and a minor in Business. I learned programming in school (
asp.net/html, java, javascript, vb.net, etc) and basically just applied for Developer positions.
It was tough, interviews that required hours of talking, some skills tests that you would never use on the job, and then more interviews. Took a couple months and finally landed a few jobs as a developer until the economy hit and then I had to find another job which is why I had to learn java, jsp, jsf..all stuff I never liked but now Im in a good position. My company will pay for my masters but I have to pay the school up front which I am having trouble doing at the moment.
So i guess to take away from this, if you do small side jobs and show it off, you can land a job with a decent place without eve a degree! That is how that friend found his job but it can be tough if you prefer one thing over the other and don't expand.
