I had a friend that was really good with css/html and php. He never finished college and got a job some with a decent medical company doing web development. He made pretty good money I was surprised how quickly he got a job too. I have a BS in Info sciences and technology and a minor in Business. I learned programming in school (asp.net/html
It was tough, interviews that required hours of talking, some skills tests that you would never use on the job, and then more interviews. Took a couple months and finally landed a few jobs as a developer until the economy hit and then I had to find another job which is why I had to learn java, jsp, jsf..all stuff I never liked but now Im in a good position. My company will pay for my masters but I have to pay the school up front which I am having trouble doing at the moment.
So i guess to take away from this, if you do small side jobs and show it off, you can land a job with a decent place without eve a degree! That is how that friend found his job but it can be tough if you prefer one thing over the other and don't expand.
