Do you think it'll be okay to use this?

I'm moving into a campus apartment in a few weeks for school. I was looking at the living guide, and it says:
Quote:
Each apartment is equipped with an Ethernet port located within the apartment. Routers are NOT to be hooked up to the Ethernet port because it will cause the entire internet system for a section of apartments to reset and stop all internet activity for the section of apartments affected. If wireless internet is desired contact TAC to buy a FSU approved and programmed wireless access point. Use of a router can result in your internet service being disconnected from your apartment.

The adapter I use here at home (ASUS USB-N53 Black Diamond) has an AP mode that will share internet. I was assuming I'd just use that if I needed to get online with my PS3 or my tablet.

I don't think it'll cause any problem seeing it's not a router. But, I'm not all that up on networking, so I may be complete off.

I really don't want a router, and don't know if I call up, and ask if they'll just be adamant about the router.

I would say yes, because it is not routing multiple internet items. If it turns out it messes up and they ask you if you have a router, you can say no.

No because they do this to keep people from having unsecured access points and sharing the university internet unsecured to the public.

I say let someone surf unsecured if they want to, its their own fault for putting themselves at risk lol. it kind of limits people's ability to use wifi based devices like kindles and the like though, its a pretty restrictive policy but I guess it has its reason

I believe the AP software from ASUS allows hiding of the SSID. I know you can password protect it. I was planning on doing that anyways (like I do now). The whole point of me wanting to just use my wireless adapters AP mode was to save money on a router that I don't really want.

I guess I'll call and ask. If they say no and insist I use a router then I'll just use my phone. USB tethering is a okay, and I can still use the wireless adapter as an AP with it. LTE is strong on the campus so that should work out fine.

That's the worst technical definition/smoke-blowing I've ever heard, unless they put all of the student ports into portfast mode and have had idiot students implement switches incorrectly causing a broadcast storm.

Hidden SSID networks still transmit data on the spectrum, and are easily visible.
