You are lucky in this regard over there in US so far. In EU you pay the full tax of the country where the online store is based at so about 18 - 25% VAT on everything you buy online, same as you would have bought the item from the brick n mortar store in the country where the shop is based at.

Then again - in EU consumer protection agencies are relatively rabid.

I'm myself relatively neutral in this regard ofc, both systems have their advantages but I'm not that sure that our enlightened governments know better than myself what to do with my money considering how often its spent on bombing countries where as far as I can see there is only sand, scorpions and oil.
