Power Saving Mode during gaming - Help please - Page 2

The other option would be go into device manager and under your display adapters open the properties for your AMD card, by right clicking it in the list. In the properties window there should be a power management tab, in that tab it will have an option to allow the system to shut down the device to conserve power. Make sure this feature is disabled, that should resolve your problem.

There's not a power management tab and I didn't see anything about disabling this. I went to the AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series properties and it shows the following tabs: General, Driver, Details & Resources. Were these instructions for Windows 7?

I spoke too soon in my last post, still having the same issue. I want to try anything I can before I go ahead and reinstall Windows.

Have you tried restoring Windows to an earlier point before the issue began occuring?

I dont think his computer is "going to sleep", it's crashing since the only way to recover is to do a hard reset. The Video card for whatever reason fails to output to the display causing it to show a message. Disabling power states in BIOS wont resolve the issue.

Try a reinstall, but i think this is hardware related.

OP, when the video card fails, is the computer still responsive (caps lock key, num lock key turn on and off)? Or do you just immediately reset whenever this happens?

No, it's not responsive. Caps lock, num lock, scroll lock won't turn on or off. I can still hear the computer running when it happens and I have waited about 30 seconds to see if it would shut itself off but it doesn't. The only thing the screen says is "DVI - Power Saving Mode" and it turns off, as well as the computer being unresponsive.

I'm just going to reformat and reinstall Windows when I get a chance.

It sounds like a gpu issue. Your computer crashes due to some reason and gpu is unable to provide video output to your monitor. Thus your monitor goes into power saving mode. Try these before a windows reinstall -
1) Insert your gpu in the 2nd pcie (x16) slot and game again.
2) Remove gpu completely and connect monitor to inbuilt display. Play the same game (at lowest setting of course).

Try these and post your results. Also does this problem happens only when playing games or randomly?

Ok, here's what I've done.. I reinstalled Windows 7, still having the same issue. I switched the GPU into the 2nd PCIe slot, same issue. Then I removed the GPU and used the on-board graphics and haven't had the issue. I was testing with Diablo 3 and when using the GPU it went into power saving mode once within 5-10 minutes and another time in about 30 minutes.. I just got done playing after about 2 hours and it didn't have that issue, tho I'm going to test it more tomorrow longer and with different games. So clearly I need to get a replacement GPU, right?

It looks like you do. If the gpu is in warranty, send it for RMA right away. As for last measure, you can use the lucidlogix virtu thing. Insert the gpu in any pcie slot. Connect your monitor to motherboard's inbuilt display and select the i mode in virtu control panel. Although i don't think it will change anything as your gpu seems to be faulty. However, you can try it for confirmation. BTW, did you overclock your gpu? Sapphire have good customer support, so you should have no problems. Best of Luck and keep us posted. thumb.gif

I used Virtu MVP but still had the same problem. Sending it back for a replacement today. While I was getting a RMA number from Newegg I checked other reviews and apparently other people have had the same or similar issue. Hopefully the replacement will work because that fixed the problem for some of the people, but not others. Some said the GPU wasn't compatible with something in their computer. I just hope that isn't my issue as well. I'll update again when I get the replacement.

Thanks for all the help! New to Overclock.net, but I'm here to stay thumb.gif

Edit: No, I didn't overclock anything. Had the issue from the day I installed it.
