First foray into OC: MSI 460 Cyclone

Thread Starter
Hello. Im looking to OC my card since upgrading to a 500 series will probably just end up being bottlenecked by my CPU. Id like to squeeze more FPS out of BF3, but not really increase the graphics levels. On larger maps the FPS tends to drop to 30s, sometimes even 20s

Specs:
Q9300 2.5 Quad
GTX460 768
8 GB ram
Windows 7 64bit
650W PSU (i think)

I have afterburner and the default settings for core is 725. 1800 for Memory. Card runs at 33c idle, at most 70c under max load. How far would I be able to push the card without worrying about damaging anything? I know these newer cards have failsafes for when people make mistakes but id rather not fry anything, as id just end up building a new PC and replacing this stock HP I am using.

I reckon you`d get high temps and artifacting before frying.
Push as much as you can without touching volts
if you touch volts check VRMs for adequate airflow/cooling

how do i tell if ive pushed the card too far. says it goes all the way to 1090 core 2340 memory. will it just start heating up and crashing/artifacting?

yeah pretty much
run Kombustor or Furmark for a stress test
you`l notice artefact's in games and stuff like weird physics/geometry/colors
as for temps its up to you I`d say 75-80c max I underclocked my 460 so I get high 50s to low 60s under load thumb.gif

What you do is increase the core by 10mhz incriments (wait a bit) while kombuster is running in the background.

Then when you start to see artifacts, yellow lines dots or anything that is abnormal, lower it by 20-30mhz and test it further by playing a game.

Be careful with memory overlocking. You don't want to push it too far because you might fry them. Generally speaking, you can safely/easily overclock it by 5-10%

Also, stay under 80C and you'll be fine.

I had a msi gtx460 oc cyclone 1gb 256bit version and it oc'd to 875mhz core,2200mhz memory,1.050v voltage applied,so you can take a reference from it.

im running kombuster and getting like 5 FPS. it says the core speed is at 50, and getting throttled down by like 750. is that supposed to happen?

Wait... So when you're running kombustor, the core is at 50MHz? It fluctuates between 50-750MHz while running kombustor?

Have you tried reinstalling the drivers?

Also post a screenshot with GPUz, kombustor and HWmonitor so that we can see.
