Can It Be Done (Budget Loop)

Recently I was looking around and noticed I could afford a Corsair H100. However, I would prefer to have a custom loop because its more friendly for future customization.

This brings me to the question, can I build a custom water cooling loop for the same price and same performance (or possibly better performance) as the H100? Obviously I would want a dual 120mm rad and it would be cooling my AMD Phenom II X6 1090t.

If you think this can be done please list some components I should consider getting. Thanks in advance.

And does anyone know how far I should expect to be able to push my 1090t? I'm thinking 4GHz should be easy and possibly 4.2GHz. I might be getting a Crosshair IV Forumula so overclocking will be easy and I won't have to worry about my vrm's.

Hi EpicAMDGamer. It's hard to answer your question because the H100 is seldom tested against a custom loop. And the H100 stock is often modified by users who change out fans.

Here is a test comparing the H100 with stock fans to the expensive Swiftech H20-Ultima XT (120.2 rad) kit and the Noctua NH-D14 cpu air cooler. The Noctua tested about 10°C higher than the Swiftech kit and the H100 was about halfway between.

To me this means the testing using only push fans (without push/pull) in the H100 under-estimates cooling. And a custom kit would likely need to use a 120.3 radiator like this good value of a kit or push/pull to consistently out-perform a push/pull H100. Hope this help. Good luck. smile.gif

Unless you could get parts for free, I really see no way of building a Custom Loop for around the same price as a H100. The major components of the loop will rocket you past that price point quickly. Not to mention all the small stuff. My current system is 1090t at 4ghz on a crosshair formula iv. On air with Coolermaster Hyper 212 plus. I have spent the last 6weeks pricing parts for a custom loop on a new build and it got spendy quick. Sorry I'm not much help, but even the price of put together kits surpass Corsairs offering. Ok above post shows that kit ..but its not custom IMO.

Yes you are correct in saying it is not " custom " but it is a very good choice for someone just getting into watercooling on a budget. wink.gif

Yes , i am not knocking those kits at all. They can provide an excellent cooling solution..All depends on what he considers custom..to me its not something 500,000 other guys have..smile.gif

Actually I don't even have a proper place for a dual 120mm rad (or even a single 120) I was actually going to cut out a nice spot from my sidepanel and just mount it there.

I'm interested that you are at 4.0GHz. I was considering the Hyper 212 plus because it is cheap but I never knew you could easily get it to 4.0GHz. Can you go into more detail about specifically what you have all of your clocks and voltages set to in order to get 4GHz and what temps you get with the hyper 212?

I could easily afford the NH-D15 or this one pantec cooler I saw but I think i may have clearance issues. I'll have to measure.

Also I'm a bit of a noob, where it says on Newegg "Heatsink Dimensions
160 x 140 x 158mm" which measurement would I go off of to see if this cooler will fit in terms of clearance with my sidepanel (measuring from cpu to sidepanel)?

And as for www.frozencpu.com/products/11743/ex-wat-159/XSPC_Rasa_750_RS240_Universal_CPU_Water_Cooling_Kit_w_Updated_Pump_and_Free_Kill_Coil.html?tl=g30c83s137#blank
I may consider getting this.

When I said custom I mean its not a closed loop thing. I mean that In the near future I may get some 6950's or something similar and I would probably want to slap some water blocks on those (but i suppose i would need a new case and a much larger rad). So I just meant custom as in the ability to add on to it.

http://www.aquatuning.de/product_info.php/info/p13669_Alphacool-NexXxoS-Cool-Answer-240-LT-ST---kit.html - a kit
http://www.aquatuning.de/product_info.php/info/p12066_Corsair-Cooling-Hydro-Series-H100.html - a H100 - both approx 120 euros. Granted, you are in US so these prices are probably different for you. I have not looked at aqua tuning US site, but usually its more expensive over there. Or well, more precisely the H100 and Corsair stuff in general is cheaper usually over there I think.

Now about radiator, if you are going for the side-panel anyway I would probably not bother with the holes and just get by with 3 mm drill bit and some M3 bolts and mount it externally. Something like
LL
just smaller. I would aim for 3x120 mm tho if I would mount extrnally anyway. Or the particular one in the picture is Nova 1080, usually around 120$ in US, but thats probably outside your budget and quite an overkill anyway.
