How should I clean my lens?

Thread Starter
So I've just received a brand new nikon d5100, and I managed to get a finger print on the lens already.

My question is ''What is the safest and most effective way to clean my lens?''
So far I've had a look at lens pens but I'm not really sure about them.

i personally use a blower (like the rocket blower) to blow off any loose debris that you might not notice. Then with a nitrile glove and lens paper dampened with cleaning fluid, wipe the lens. Then buff with dry piece of lens paper. If necessary, i also buff with a clean (important. handle it only with your gloved hand) microfiber lens cloth.

this is just my "once in a while" cleaning method. works like a charm on my canon 50mm, 17-40mm L, and kit lens.

also throw on a UV filter when you're done. Then you dont have to worry about touching the lens glass. It's cheap insurance.

For the front element - rocket blower for dust, lint-free microfiber cloth to get the fingerprint out. Using a UV filter is fine and can be relatively cheap, but I only use them in environments that I know there's going to be excessive dust/dirt/debris or an actual risk of damage.

If it's on the rear element, you should be a bit more careful, you really want to avoid getting imperfections on the rear element.

Thank for the info guys.

I've decided to buy the lens pen kit pro, as I want something that is quick and easy to use, and also something that takes up very little space.

Just buy a microfiber cloth and a blower brush. LensPens are alright, but a little more of a pain to use than your index finger and a microfiber.

Quick and easy you say? Breathe on it and wipe it with your shirt. Works fine for me all the time.

Spit shine biggrin.gif

jk! I just carry a cheapo microfiber tower, does the job smile.gif

If you grab a quality filter, it offers great protection for your lens and doesn't alter the image much, if any. thumb.gif
