I need help. This card will be used for high resolutions. I just cant bring my self to purchase a 7870 for $70 more when I don't have pci 3.0 and it does not seem like the 6950 uses much more power but almost everyone is telling me to go for the 7870. Am I missing something here?

Yes, you are missing something...

The 7870 is as fast as a GTX 580, which was faster than the 6970 when it came out. Therefore the 7870 is significantly faster than the 6950, not to mention less heat, power draw and noise, etc.

Also, as you say you're using the card for higher resolutions, the 7870's extra power will help a lot.

No graphics card in the world is bottlenecked be PCI-E 2.0, BTW.

7870 wins practically everything compared to a 6950! Pick the 7870, you wont regret it thumb.gif

And as for PCI-E 3, the only tests that show any benefit are when running 4way sli/quadfire at high resolutions.

Yes, but bear in mind the 7xxx cards all have significant OC headroom too! wink.gif

the GTX 660 Ti is looking more like it will be priced at USD 300. So a HD 7870 at USD 250 is a good deal. Also if you want to spend anywhere around USD 300 your best option would be a HD 7950 OC.

7870 only. Like the guy above me said it's the speed of a 580. That's one hell of a card. Also, Lower power consumption, and less heat!

Ok, if I can buy a XFX 6950 for $190 after rebate on newegg, with an additional 2 free $50 games (Deus Ex and Battlefield 3, which I can also sell if needed), with lifetime warranty, unlock it to a 6970, and OC it on water...
..would it still be best to buy a 7970 for ~$300?..
..when the benchmarks are THIS CLOSE?

It HARDLY seems worth it...
