Having reviewed the game here on OCN, I must say Carmack still has to explain what on earth those 25 GB of data are for. Megatexture is a concept I still haven't understood to it's full extent. How can such an advanced technique produce such crappy results yet use so much space ? Crysis has much better all round graphics, yet uses much less space, GTA: EFLC TBoGT, while being DX9 and a third person game, has a huge city that you can even fly over, and it uses less space.
Carmack even admitted they didn't make any higher resolution textures when they released the 1.2 patch (which is a bit odd, since they initially said the original files had to be compressed a lot) with the upsampling with adaptive sharpening improvement (which needs a fast CPU, faster than a Q9550 at 3.4 Ghz (which the game says is not enough, by the way) if you don't want it to dip below 60 fps, and while dipping to 55 fps might seem perfectly acceptable, the game stutters and it's noticeable), so I wonder how much space RAGE would have needed to look as good as other games on the market.
As has been said, the game's story was normal at best, if you are going to be playing RAGE it won't be for the story, it'll be for the fps and the relatively fun driving (though driving and shooting / defending your vehicle it is far from being a very developed experience, though for a first time for id, the driving mechanics are actually good).
All in all it's a decent shooter, with decent locations, even if the story driving you to those locations is nothing out of the ordinary. There isn't really an interesting plot that holds your attention.

Use DosBOX, works perfectly.
Actually you don't need to use DosBOX because the package sold on Steam already comes with it, it's all automated. The same for Commander Keen, Wolfenstein 3D, Spear of Destiny, etc.

I admit though, with Rage, I was aware of the texture issues before playing, and used a custom config file right from the start to cure all those issues. It was also one of the most beautiful games I've played, with the custom config. I found it more visually stunning than Crysis 2, maybe not from a technical standpoint, but from an overall art direction perspective.
I actually liked Duke Nukem Forever (I bought it after the patches) better than RAGE. It's actually better at what it does than RAGE. I must confess I did not play Duke Nukem 3D, so I don't know if this game is out of touch with that one, but I did play the original Duke Nukem 2D side scrolling games, and I found Duke Nukem Forever to be a lot of fun. Whether you like the jokes or not, the game has character. And it's got fps multiplayer, giving you many hours of fun, in a Quake 3 style.
