Fanless Operating Modes

A high end power supply that runs without a fan?! Preposterous! Get off my lawn with that nonsense!

.

That's the era I come from when it comes to power supplies wink.gif

So a few questions...

1) Has anyone heard of a power supply overheating because the thermal sensing mechanism failed and the fan never came on? What about the fan failing and someone never noticed because they thought the heat just wasn't getting high enough?

2) I'm concerned that my system may not get hot enough to trigger the fan, but hot enough to keep the power supply nice and toasty all day long. Is this an issue?

I suppose worst case scenario I can always mount an external fan on the power supply.

Thoughts?

I assume you are talking about PSUs that have fans that only turn on at higher loads like some Seasonics?

As with all electronics, there are a multitude of failure scenarios. Thermal sensors are reliable solid-state technology and I would not be concern. The fan will turn on when the PSU deems it needs to.... it generates heat as well.
Once again...

It's much more likely for a fan to fail than the sensor to fail, so I wouldn't be that concerned.

Also, these power supplies have warranties, overtemperature protection (shuts off when it gets too hot), etc. If it was a problem that might affect a significant number of units, don't you think the manufacturers would think twice before slapping on 5-7 year warranties?

A lot of high-end power supplies these days don't have a fanless mode at low loads anyway, so it's not like you have to pick one with this feature. There are plenty of alternatives available.
