New Catleap owner here shopping for a video card.

Thread Starter
Hi all,

New user here to OCN (though I've been reading a while). My Catleap is in route and I'm shopping for a new video card. My current system is a i7-950 3.06Ghz (O/C'd to 3.6Ghz currently) with a Kuhler 620 and 12 GB 1600mhz DDR3 memory, Corsair TX650W power supply all on a Sabertooth X58 motherboard.

I currently have a XFX 5770 1GB video card, but while it's been fairly good at most games, it certainly doesn't perform well in some more intense ones at 1920x1080 resolution. Saints Row 3, BF3 seem to want more than my system can provide.

So my short list based on my own budget concerns is this:

- MSI 7950 twin cooler (seems like it'll be over clockable and outperform a 7970? Not sure if it needs additional cooling to do this? - I don't want a screaming banshee in my case either!)
- ??

The EVGA 670 is very attractive looking card, but seems to come at a premium cost.

I primarily play SC2, WOW, GW2, and various Steam games.

edit: One other concern I have. Which may or may not be answerable by some of you, is that I dual boot as a hackintosh currently and don't want to lose that ability. I've heard people having success with 670's, but if you have some knowledge here that'd be useful too!

Hoping for some input for my particular situation !

Thank you !

both are good cards, but i would recommend the 670. If your ok with paying the price its most probably the best bang for your buck card out on the market. Or you could wait for the 660gtx

hope that helps

If you want the best value for your money get the HD 7950 OC and overclock it. here is the Sapphire HD 7950 950 Mhz. even at stock speeds this card would perform very close to a HD 7970.

Sapphire HD 7950 950 Mhz edition - USD 350
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102991

This card uses a HD 7970 PCB with overclocking friendly DUAL BIOS feature.

The MSI HD 7950 OC is a good option. uses a HD 7970 PCB . the MSI HD 7950 has better price after rebate and a 3 yr warranty. sapphire has faster speeds out of the box and a better cooler, though it has only 2 yr warranty. so pick what you like.

About hackintosh don't have an idea whether the HD 7950 works.

Based on the games you said you play, the 670 will be the faster card. Results from here: http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/HD_7970_GHz_Edition/5.html

I had a 7950 msi twin frozr and it ran hot and died and I have seen quite a few others popping up recently about it running hot. So if you want to do the 7950, maybe get the sapphire 950mhz version or something like that.
