Also on a side note, when Skyrim came out, it was that game that got me to stop paying my monthly subs.

damn, only 9.1 million subscribers? that's still 9+ million more than any other mmo on the market. losses always happen to blizzard right before the next expansion comes out.

Our guild was mostly consistent of pugs -___-

I left Drow (one of the top guilds on my server) because I got tired of their way of giving loot in raids. After that, every guild I joined was a joke.

Boosh Shadow Bolt 10k crits ftw lol. I also hated that fight though because it was sometimes impossible to go all out and control threat. I also agree with that guy that mentioned your server mattering and guilds legitimately hating each other. I used to play on Bonechewer, and Bonechewer had Vis Maior (a top Alliance guild in the world at the time) and every Horde on our server just hated them. When we'd see one of their players (in the rare occasion that it was just one of them) we'd summon up like 5 to 10 people and camp their corpse for the better half of 2 hours. Man... I hated those guys lol. They always ruined AV for Horde on our server. They'd steamroll Lok frown.gif

Player subs pretty much always drop before and then boom when the expansion comes. Then there's a lull again a few months down the line when people reach max level if there's nothing to do for a while. They've done a lot to ensure it didn't drop as much this time around by technically giving WoW away for free..or 4 free months, depending at how you look at it. Either way they are keeping that million + base until at the very lease October and since MoP comes in September it means that many of the folks who may be thinking of leaving will get to experience (and get to be tempted) by the expansion - smart.

I'm not sure why or how people come to the conclusion that it sucks now vs. before but that's of course their opinion. Technically how I see it is, you get tired of it. It doesn't suck because you get tired of it. When I get tired of it, I suspend my account and take a break until I miss it. I'm not a gamer at heart so this does happen. There are people that go overboard, I know of people playing 15+ hrs on end - you obviously burn out if you do it too much....you burn out if you overdo anything at all.

As an MMO I find it extraordinary that they've kept their subs this high for 8 years since essentially as a player, you are doing the same things over and over and over again. For some I think the grind was fun. For others it was the effort it took to pull off encounters. Now that the difficulty has been significantly reduced, as well as the grind factor, they no longer find it alluring.

I actually enjoy the game more now than I did when it was released. There are moments I wouldn't give up and experiences that were rough but fun. . But it used to be such a grind to do everything. Sure I don't mind putting in the effort but it was pretty intense. I definitely wouldn't give up the initial grind to 60. I remember having to sit and wait for parties to come together through chatting in the party channel...after 30m you'd get a party going and then 10m into the dungeon someone would have to leave and a party member would have to go into town to look for a replacement. Not fun. It was difficult to jump in and play WoW for, say 1 or 2 hrs because an instance alone took more than that and getting the players to do it took at the very least 20m or so. The raid runs used to be way more intense, often lasting 5, maybe even more hrs with not many options for wipe recovery but running back. Oh, the good old days. There are definitely good memories...but I'm glad it evolved because if it was the way it was in 2004, I'd have permanently quit by now. It was just too time consuming.

There's not a whole lot to complain about in terms of what to do as you have so many options of how to play now and none of which require the time consumption of pre-LK WoW. Now you can jump in and do some dailies or do a quick heroic dungeon or 2, level an alt, etc. and not spend 4hrs doing it. It's way more flexible.

If I did have to complain though I'd say that I'm unhappy about how overboard on commercializing every aspect of the game they have gone. I'm sure that is Activisions influence. At one point I remember Blizzard saying they would never, ever sell in-game items for real money....well, that "rule" broke with the sale of pets and mounts a few years ago. Then they started selling name, faction and race changes, then paid server switches for characters and now guilds. Granted, no character needs to do or have these things but it's unfair that someone who doesn't mind throwing away $25 or $10 on virtual items, makes out with pets and mounts that look arguably nicer than the ones available in game.
What scares me most is this whole Diablo 3 real money auction house thing, there's no doubt in my mind that it will come to WoW if not with this expansion eventually (with some patch), then by the next. That'll probably be the thing that could prompt my forever-wowquit. I have never quit the game but I have taken extended breaks. The nice thing is that as long as you come back at the dusk or dawn of an expansion, it's easy to get right back into the game.

To those thinking of trying it...it's going to be difficult to go in and live up to the expectations of people you may hear talking about it. You also hear all the bad things and then go in and look for it. You really have to take it as it is. It's rough getting into a game that is x expansions in and then loving it off the bat, you'd have to give it a chance. Alas, you can generally tell within a few months if you like it or hate it.
