3770K getting high tpf.... Help plz

I'm running a 3770K @ 4.8ghz with G.Skill Ripjaws X 1866 memory and getting 7 min. tpf's on 6097/98/99 units. I'm 8 hours prime blend stable in Win7, so I'm pretty sure stability isn't the issue. I've tried Ubuntu 10.10 in a vm and native and tpf's are still 7+ mins. Any ideas???

What is your CPU usage show while the VM is running? Maybe all 4 cores are not running. Did you give all 4 cores to the VM in the VMware setup?

I've been folding on my 2600K for TC for awhile, so I'm not a noob lol tongue.gif but yes they had 4 cores at 99-100% usage

That was the mistake I made, but I am a noob biggrin.gif. 4.8ghz seems like a pretty high clock for Ivy (=to 5.0 on Sandy). Could you be hitting the thermal throttle? Yes that is noob thing too, but it is worth asking.

Temps are around 72C under prime... so it's not throttling

Those are the same units I have been getting on my i5 760 at 4.0 in VM and my TPF is 10.5 min with 15.5 PPD, and they take me up to 18 hours to complete......Uggg

If you have tried VMware and native Ubuntu, then it must be a hardware problem since the odds of the same software issue being present in two different OS setups is very small (unless something in your setup was flawed). You could confirm a hardware issue by running some CPU benchmarks and comparing them other 3770k @4.8ghz. If your scores are off, then that confirms a hardware issue (unless something is using your CPU in the background which you should know about). If it is hardware, triple check your bios. If your benchmark scores are good, then I would suspect something is wrong with your Ubuntu setup. I am getting 5:35-5:45, and you should be around 5:20-30 since your CPU is about 4% faster (we have the same clock speed). At 7 minutes you are looking at a 22% reduction. So I am guessing something serious like throttling. If you had a bad sensor showing occasional high spikes it could trigger a throttle even if overall temps are good.
