[TR] Microsoft tightens grip on OEM Windows 8 licensing

A series of slides leaked online reveal information about Microsoft's new OEM Activation process for Windows 8, which is designed to make it more difficult to activate illegal copies of Redmond's latest OS. OEM Activation (OA) allows PC manufacturers to ship systems with Windows preinstalled and already activated, so that customers don't need to take any additional steps to activate the OS when they first use a new computer. In the past, hackers have managed to take advantage of the OA process to activate purloined copies of Windows, which ordinarily need to be activated with a license key. Rogue OEMs have also used similar systems to avoid paying tribute to Redmond

That's exactly what I was thinking. This means that if you get a new component, you have to buy a new license... hmm... maybe now we know why it's only $40 lol

I guess I will not be getting Windows 8. It is a good feature but it will be hacked. Mark my words

Only thing different over Windows 7 seems to be individual licenses on each OEM PC, and some backend reporting for the OEMs.

Right now there is one license per OEM pretty much, and MS couldn't deactivate a abused key because they would disable legit PCs.

What about us system builders? I'd never run an "upgrade" version of Windows. They're troubling.

As a system builder you obviously know that you don't need to install the upgrade first. You install using a stand-alone version of the OS, and use the upgrade's product key, bam. No upgrade, clean Win7 install.. and soon Win8 installs as well.

This could make some companies avoid windows 8 all together all that extra work means they have to spend more and charge more for each computer even if windows 8 is cheaper.

Microsoft is doing everything it can, to push itself out of the operating system business right now, and I find this extremly amusing.

Must be why valve and others are looking into supporting Linux as they do not like the direction Microsoft is taking the Windows OS
