Honestly, microsoft would likely be better off financially shedding its OS business, its never been a revenue generator, and with the increasing complexity required for staying current it going to get many times more exspensive for them to keep devloping windows. I think MS will likely move to toolkits, frameworks, developers tools and applications like office, as a income stream. As these are largely there biggest sources of revenue as it is now.

I just wish they'd pull the bandaid off and get it over with.

The whole reason Windows even exists, is becuase they needed a OS to run their applications on, for use with open hardware IBM PC clones. Thats pretty much it.

Not likely - more to the tune of shoring up lost revenue due to piracy issues. From a large-business or corporation stand point, most fortune 500 companies ususally purchase an Enterprise Agreement which allows them to avoid OEM activation hassles. That also tends to be the biggest revenue generator when it comes to OS licensing.

I would assume its not related to the percieved direction of Microsofts latest OS offerings, but more to cater to the growing user-base of Linux savvy folks, which has been long overdue wink.gif

Microsoft doesn't really make any money on its OS products, it never has. They are trying to fix that, a stupid decision if there ever was one. Also Valve has been out publically saying MS is commiting Operating System suicide with windows8, so I doubt its all about "linux users" and more about looking for a home for their product.

I think we would probably need a source or two to move this from opinion to fact.

EDIT

4% growth in the Windows and Windows Live services from last year.

Ok, so the Os division had 4b in revenue, along with windows live, which is tied to xbox, now, what was the developement cost for window8 and window7 and windowsxp last year, hint, its allot of freaking money.

The OS was always a platform for which to seel dev tools, software etc. The OS just facilitated it, and no other product at the time it was created existed, so thats why they did. There was no competitng product, except for apple, and that was always a walled garden of pain.

Well this just puts the nail in the coffin of Windows 8 for me. I'm using it now and it is absolutely trash. It won't let me close programs, has these stupid 'apps' and I can't one button search anymore. Grrr, damn you Microsoft.

EDIT*
Wow, I'm searching for basic things like msconfig, cmd, and it's saying not found. I feel like I'm on a Mac.

Last quote I promise, as I am not trying to turn this into a back and forth. If you read the earnings report, you will see what the operating expenses are for Windows and Windows Live (R&D etc.).
Also, XBOX does not fall into the Windows and Windows Live, it falls into Entertainment and Devices Division.

There are a great number of reasons why Microsoft developed the OS's it did, and thank god too, otherwise SCCM guys like myself would not have anything else to do biggrin.gif

Those are Gross earnings, those are not profits, earnings are pre-cost revenue streams, they do not always account for overhead, btw, microsofts financials department is notorious for that type of ommision.

Go pull the stock holder financials disclosure.

Should all be there.

MS developed its OS, becuase it needed a playground for its applications, which didn't sell in enough volume on apple pc's, and apple was introducing competing products. ehh, I don't know if I agree we are better off for microsoft staying in the OS market, largely, the product is mediocre at best, and at worst in recent years has become obstructive, and downright harmful to the users interest. When windows xp came out, most reffered to it as spam, disguised as a operating system

1. Linux will never have DirectX.
2. OpenGL is faster, so I don't know why they would want DirectX support in the first place.

Also, this only affects OEMs, and those who install pirated OEM copies, so nothing anyone at OCN should be concerned about.
