OCing the i5-3570K

Thread Starter
It's been a while since I OCed and went to start a little but BIOS seems to have changed a lot. I was hoping someone could help me get through the new tech with some possible deep OCing. I know when I did it last I wasn't just tweaking the VCore, but also things in the memory settings and voltage, and disabling non-needed peripherals. I am looking to get somewhere around 3.75 to 4.0 GHz. My build specs are below:

CPU: Intel i5-3570K
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116504
MOBO: Gigabyte GA-Z77-D3H (manual = http://www.gigabyte.us/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4140#manual )
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128543
RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231476
GPU: EVGA 560 Ti (non-OCed yet) & EVGA 8400 GS (downclocked)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130683
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130585
SSD: Crucial M4 128GB 6 Gb/s
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148525
PSU: Corsair 850W HX850 Silver Plus
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139011
Cooling: Corsair H80
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835181016
Case: Antec DF-85 w/ side fan
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129087

All drivers are up to date and the SSD is connected to the 6Gb/s SATA ports. I've got the H80 as an intake as the 3 front fan and side fan are intakes and the top back and 2 top fans are exhaust. Let me know if anything else is needed.

I'll keep updated settings on this first post as well as through the thread.

Thanks to all in advance and look forward to some great help as always!

BIOS = F13
CPU BLCK = 100 MHz
CPU Clock = 38
CPU Voltage = 1.145 (in BIOS), but it was running at 1.07 during IBT
CPU PLL = 1.8/auto
DRAM Multiplier = 20
DRAM Frequency = 2000 Mhz
DRAM Voltage = 1.644 V
Turbo mode = disabled
Thermal Monitoring = disabled
C1E, C3/C6, & EIST = enabled

change the multiplier to 40 and you will be good to go. These chips can handle up to 4.2 before you need to play with the vCore, and the memory doesn't really need to be played with until you start using the baseclock as well.

edit - You can also play with the PLL a bit but it isn't necessary. also you may even be able to lower the vcore down to about 1.12 if you won't push past 4.0 and it should be stable still. Every chip is different but this is just from my experience.

I am too getting the i5 3570k with the H100 corsair cooler and the MSI Z77A-GD65 LGA ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130643) motherboard. Should i use the OC Geneie button, or going into bios. 4.0 would be a nice starting point probably going to 4.5.

I would use the bios since you will be trying to push 4.5. Better to know what youre doing in there now then learn after the gene has adjusted stuff. All you really will be playing with is the multiplier, vCore, and the PLL.

So just tweak the multiplier, VCore (down), and PLL? What does PLL do again? Are there any peripherals I should enable/disable?

playing with the PLL will help with stability. Some say that lowering it can also help temps slightly but not anything significant. Play around, you will find what works best for you. I would go with a 41 multiplier, a 1.12 vcore, and a 1.6 PLL to start. That is what worked for me, you should have something similar.

CPU PLL overvolt usually already comes enabled in these giga mobos. It basically helps you get a more stable overclock and especially when OC'ing till higher frequencies. Three main things that you need to adjust is the LLC (load-line calibration), Vcore as mentioned before and setting the multiplier. For a 4Ghz overclock you can follow these steps:

1) Set the LLC at extreme or the highest value available I.e. above 'high'.
2) Set the CPU multiplier at 4Ghz.
3) lastly, set the Vcore voltage at 1.030V.

These are the settings that I've used on my UD5H and it runs superb. However, if you PC BSOD's, then you may need to increase the Vcore volts but in small increments.

OC genie isn't useful as it gives way higher volts than needed to make the OC stable. It'll be better for your processor to get the best temps by OC'ing it manually , just as I've mentioned above.

If it helps i overclocked my i5 3570k on the sabertooth z77. iv reached 4.5 with hardly any problems, all i did was change the turbo mode to 45 set the volts to off set mode seleted + for the offset and made a offset of 0.020.. Thats it, i changed nothing else. i found is so easy i had to make a thread to ask if i missed something.
when i made the thread i was only at 4.4 but i thought why not try 4.6, i got blue screens after that and i upped the offset but i still blue screened or a core would fail during prime95 blend test.so i set it to 4.5.
Anyway for me 4.5 involves nothing more than what i just stated.
i'm sure if i got into more complicated over clocking i could push it more, but 4.5 for me is great and im sure my cpu will never bottleneck my gtx 670 at these speeds.

What temps did you have @ 4.5ghz?
What was the Vcore @ load?
What cooling setup is this?

Is this on OCN? MMmm rabbit..It's what's fer dinner.Yum!
umm..yeah..no temps? You are probably thermally limited @ 4.5 with that 3570K
I'd get a 2500K if I wanted to overclock it..o yeah.. I did biggrin.gif
