[ARS] Does Windows 8 succeed as a true tablet operating system

Among desktop users, Windows 8's user interface has been met with a lukewarm reception, inspiring a recurring refrain: "Why have they put a tablet interface on my desktop system?" That Windows 8 is actually suitable for and effective on touch-driven tablets has been almost taken for granted.

A successful entry into the tablet market demands a strong touch interface. The competition from the iPad is stiff, and the iPad's iOS has five years of user interface refinement under its belt. Has Microsoft really gotten it right with Windows 8 and touch?

Kinda.

Kind of works against the "it's a tablet OS" argument.

I'm all for people with touch screens being able to get a pain in their arm whilst doing mundane tasks, and doing so on an efficient OS.

That being said, let the touch people have their touch stuff. And let all the people who like mice and keyboard have their mice and keyboard-y stuff. And voila, the world is happy.

Alas Microsoft doesn't want that frown.gif

I don't recall not being able to use my mouse and keyboard to do anything on my server build running W8 that I couldn't do while it was running W7.

I wanted to work with a bunch of other programmers to create an alternative, like what StarDock made, and some other company, to reintroduce the start button. But that whole effort died on the vine.

I love the under-the-hood changes of Windows 8, but I just can't get into the UI that's replaced the Start Menu. I have tried and tried, and it's just not for me. Then again, I am a classic kind of person, when it comes to cars, games, music, etc.

This doesn't mean I'm resistant to change. Personally, I just feel this isn't much of an improvement for a person like me, while I accept that for others it may be the answer to all their prayers.
