Project Downsize - CM 690II - Abandoned For Now Eventually Folding Rig...

Downsize

Taking a Cooler Master 690 II Advanced rotating the motherboard 180 degrees and cutting it all down into a smaller size!

I'm afraid that I will have to start this log off with a chunk of reading because it is important to know what I am trying to do wink.gif

I just recently finished my first water cooled rig in a Core 1000 (Work Log here) And I am super happy with it but I have always been a fan of the Silverstone FT-02 and its rotated motherboard. Especially after seeing lowfat's build it inspired me to ditch the Matx form factor and move back to a large case. But that was never gonna happen so I was thinking of what I could do and looking around OCN when I came upon a CM 690 II mod thread and it made me realize that I have one of these beautiful cases in my closet collecting dust! So as it says above I plan on rotating the motherboard 90 degrees to the right and cutting the case down so that it is smaller, similar to the size of a core 1000 while still trying to retain the look of the 690. I will admit this is a project and will take some time to finish as I am very busy... I will eventually finish it but there is no saying when frown.gif I am about 75% sure of what I am gonna do but I have never tried to do something like this before so help will be needed along the way thumb.gif Thats all for now but please sub and help me through this journey! grouphug.gifcheers.gif

Well that was the old idea but now I have moved on to what you see now!!!!! Look below for updates thumb.gif

Quick Tear Down and Brief Planning

So I took all the mesh and all the 'extras' that were on the case off so that I could see what I was working with... There are alot of rivets -.- nonetheless I have an idea of what I am working with now and at the moment my biggest concern will be cutting the top and front panels down to size while still retaining the look... (will elaborate later)

Case cleaned of dust and now only rivets hold it together Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Extras taken off of panels Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Extras Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

HDD cages Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Ok so here is where it gets tricky... I will have to cut these panels in half or so but I need to be able to retain the look... If I cut it perfectly straight then there will only be a little line however what can I use to fill that line?

Front Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Top Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

The plan... Rotate what is in the red square marked with arrows to the right 90 degrees biggrin.gif (MS PAINT FTW) Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Sigh I forgot to add the HDD and SSD still not sure where to put them but if there are any other suggestions to this please tell me as it is not set in stone!

This looks interesting. thinking.gif I don't have the guts to cut up my 690ii lol.

As for HDD and SSD, You might have to put it on the back behind the mobo. Otherwise all I can think to do would be mount in front of the PSU but I don't know if there could be any interference caused by the PSU being directly next to storage-holding hardware

I was maybe thinking mounting it at the top of the case but wire routing wise it would be too hard so maybe it will go in front of the PSU.
