If he doesn't like any of the options you're presenting, just shrug, tell him "I can't recommend a pre-made, but apparently that's the only kind of computer that will make you happy." Then wish him good luck and let him find one.

At a certain point (you choose when), he's no longer taking advice from you and is just getting the computer he would have gotten on his own anyway, but you're doing the legwork.

I have had people do this to me after asking for my advice. If he is still interested in the pre-built, suggest to him that the custom should have a longer usable lifetime as you can upgrade the parts that are outdated. Also, if you could come in under budget, that might sway him as well.

i think you shouldn't go with AMD. more cores wont mean anything atm. at least the quad cores that is in the range of a G630. the 1156 pentium dual core, without any OC beat a athlon x3 455, keep in mind. if i were you, i would insist on the intel rig (after changing the mobo to gigabyte, cant go wrong with gigabyte) and try until you get bored. after that, just tell him "i tried to help, but if youre not going to help me, youre on your own" and just go. im not trying to say that you should make him buy the intel rig, can be any rig, but if it was me, i wouldnt spend my time unless he listens to me.

He ended up sticking with his prebuilt computer and upgrading the PSU/GPU.

He purchased a Corsair GS 600w PSU and a Nvidia PNY GT 440 2GB GPU.
