GPU Always Overheating - Page 9

Darn, it's a 6950 too. Don't take any risks, use those TIM removers if you can't get it off. My god, stupid MSI, only hurting their reputation. That much thermal paste is a reason to avoid Brand names. What thermal paste did you order btw ?

iv got antec formula 6. im lightly shaving off the paste from the gpu with my flat head at surgeon delicacy but there is no way to gently remove it from the edges of the gpu, is it ok to leave it? i will post a pic of it once i clean the main surface

Yes, it's ok to leave the crud at the bottom edge of the gpu as it's non conductive silicone grease thermal paste, most likely. If you're just ocd, like me, use q-tips, moisten it with 90% isopropyl alcohol, then dab it on a paper towel before getting the crud off. You just don't want the q-tip saturated, so when you apply a little pressure alcohol doesn't ooze all over the card, not that it would really hurt it, but why risk it.

Wow, so it was the paste being crusty and hard. Yea that will make temps skyrocket.

That Antec paste should last a good few years, by then you might of upgraded anyway biggrin.gif

everything on the graphics card is either thermal pads or thermal paste. there shouldn't be any thermal tape unless you have a half-assed watercooling situation where you added extra vrm coolers to your card.

just look for graphics card thermal pads, you arent going to grab one for the processor, that will use thermal paste.
you need them for the ram and from the one picture it looks like those are on the mosfets.

as for size, i no clue, my card actually has a heatsink ontop of the ram so i didn't pull mine off / need to replace them.

for thermal paste bust out the hair dryer and hit it with some heat. don't need a lot just warm it up and it will come off easy.. or should. i tried using chemicals to clean off the crap on my cpu and gpu of the xbox 360. it was a pain, so i got the idea for the hair dryer and worked like a dream.

i take it you smoke by the computer? dust looks like it.. smoking by a computer is very bad on parts because it collects dust about 10 million times faster and turns it into a thick cake of tar and dust.
if not i would drop some coin on a dust system for the house. central air, you can just get a hepa filter even one that is washable. or you can do the same thing with units that look like fans you can toss around the house.

make sure the fins of that heatsink are free and clear of any dust, then make sure to get in and around that fan..

I don't see any issue with leaving any of those pads on there. The few that are torn will sort of just mold back together when you tighten the cooler.

As long as it's not sticking up above the die enough to get in the way of the cooler and impede contact, it should be fine.

thermal pads dont need to be all one part, all they do is help make contact.
the person a few posts up had a good point, the ram doesn't need a ton of cooling. on the back of your card there you will see that there isn't any cooling on those ram chips.
you need them inside because the processor generates a bit of heat.

the mosfets are nice to have it on also because you can overclock the card with things like msi afterburner.

you could grab something like this and cut your own
