It's a damn shame, considering I got 25gb free from Skydrive.
Although I don't use it to upload profanity lol.

I'll continue to use it, unless dropbox or google drive wants to give me 25gb free thumb.gif
post #23 of 28
I'd rather build my own server, or use Pogoplug, over cloud storage. Pretty sure my server would have more space as well.

Profanity is just ridiculous to get fussy over. Or using the word "government" and "hate" in the same sentence. Is it just me, or does it feel like they're sort of butting in on our right to free speech?

I think it's more about accountability than anything else.

I have given internet access to some neighbors of mine and I am SO paranoid about what they're doing with it.
If I could monitor their connection for things I didn't want to be held accountable for, I would but I'm not set up that way since I've never done it before. Sometimes you make the ultimate sacrifice when you try to help other people out. To trust someone you don't know is stupid...I don't trust the neighbor, but I am trying to do something good and sometimes you take that chance in order to be a good human being.

MS doesn't want to be held accountable for data users may have stored in their cloud so they scare people away from even thinking of uploading these kinds of things. Personally I don't have an issue with the policy. If you need to store things like that in the cloud then find a cloud service that adopts a policy where anything and everything is allowed and you pay for it. This is a free service that they are providing and they simply need these assurances.

Think of a bigger picture where some psycho has uploaded a suicide letter or plot to do something crazy (like the Colorado cinema tragedy, just as an example) and after all the crap goes down and they investigate them, accessing all the person's personal stuff they find these things in MS cloud - imagine the terribad publicity and all the advocates blaming MS? I don't know how strict the other cloud operators are but I suspect that they'll all come to a similar way of thinking sooner than later.

Granted, I don't agree with how extreme MS seems to be with the issue, and losing your other accounts as well is just plain silly. Wih skydrive practically an implant of Windows 8, it will be interesting to see how it plays out when/if people start getting banned for having pics of their families in bathing suits and such, or people being banned for uploading their legally acquired media or ebooks.

Only time (and some publicity toward the issue) will tell on if they revamp the TOS to be more focused on the content they don't want in their cloud.

I'm sure MS will have some trouble sooner or later in EU over this kind of practice as in many countries that kind of stuff, I imagine, is illegal. Not sure about US but at least in EU. You can put whatever you like in your TOS n stuff but local laws override these and reading persons "personal" files .. well .. that's.. not good.

I don't think I will ever use cloud storage. I don't like the idea of sending my data to a remote server that can be opened up by its owner or a hacker. I keep all my backups on an external RAID box with my most important files on a flash drive. If the data on my computer is destroyed as well as the RAID box and flash drive, I assume that God did not want me to have that data!
