Hard Drive Docking Station Help

Thread Starter
Ok, so I've borrowed my friends hard drive, which is a Seagate Barracuda 750GB on a docking station. He uses this hard drive on a MAC which is just plugged in and used for storage.

I'm plugging this hard drive in on WINDOWS 7 and it does not show up in My Computer, but it shows up in Disk Management as 698GB of unallocated space. Also, it said something about an MBR to initiate the hard drive and I clicked Yes. Now I'm worrying... Can I just put files on it somehow and will it still work ok with my friends MAC OS. I don't want to like format it or partition it.

Any help would be much appreciated.

The disk is likely formatted with OS X file system which I believe is HFS+
You'll either need to download/purchase an HFS+ file system driver for Windows, or copy the data from the drive, format as NTFS or FAT and then restore the data. The Mac will be able to use an NFTS or FAT volume.

Oops, you clicked yes to initiating the disk. The data is still there but the disk might be unreadable by the Mac (it may be able to repair it, I don't use OS X so I'm not sure). Initiating an MBR was not a good thing, unfortunately ... redface.gif

Bad. Not sure if you'll be able to recover it now. Put it back on your friend's Mac and see if it has a recovery tool for it or something. Actual data should still be intact for now just not sure how easy it will be to recover. If plugging it in to your friend's Mac doesn't fix it, try running a live Linux distro to see if you might be able to recover it.

P.S.
And for goodness' sake, tell your friend what happened before you manage to lose all his data. He might be more familiar with HFS recovery tools.

Damn, that sucks. I transferred the files using a program called MacDrive and I've given the HDD back to him... Not sure if he's plugged it back in. Can the MBR not be deleted using FDISK or something like that? The hard drive hasn't been reformatted or partitioned or anything, it was just this master boot record thing that was added to it.

It might be possible. Again, not familiar enough with HFS recovery methods to definitively say if it's doable or not. Oh well, at least you have a copy of the data in case he might need to reformat.

Seems to work fine. My friend says the data is fine and perfectly readable. Maybe it's just because the hard drive is just used as a data hard drive, not a boot hard drive or anything.
