Question about Tubing/Barbs/Compression Fitting.

Thread Starter
So I've been doing some research for my new build and I'm going to go with liquid cooling. I pretty much have everything down but I just wanted to get some quick guidance with this. I read some stuff that if you get a 7/16 ID x 5/8 OD tubing that you can get a 1/2" ID barb and it'll fit much tighter. If I had a 7/16 ID x 5/8 OD tubing could I get the 1/2 ID and 5/8 OD compression fitting and would that be the best bet? or since its compression fitting do I want the exact fit?

Thanks for any/all help! tongue.gif

It depends. Getting the right sized barbs would be just fine. If you get larger barbs, then you can use a trick where you hold the end of the tubing in hot water for a while to loosen it up so you can stretch it across a larger barb. I personally wouldn't recommend using barbs without a clasp of some sort, so there isn't any point to using 1/2" barbs, but some people like to use 1/2" barbs with smaller ID tubing so they can avoid using clasps and not have to worry about the tube popping off as much.

[Edit]
My bad. I saw you say barb: a barb is not a compression fitting: for compression fittings you definitely want the correct ID and OD size.

With compression fittings you should get the proper diameter hose. It doesn't need to fit any tighter. If its too tight and you turn the compression once too many times you'll cut right through the hose. The compression fitting is the best non problematic way to fit your hoses.

For compression fittings you want the same id and od as the tubing you want to select.

Actually, if you spend the money on nice camps for the barbs, compressions ending up costing less. I've also read that XSPC Comps will cut the tubing if tighten too much. I've not had any issues with my EK Comps.

you dont have to get clamps you can zip ties to and they will work fine.

Exactly. I have some 16mm/13mm compression fittings, that is 5/8"OD and 1/2"ID if I am correct, and my tubing is 15.7mm/12.9mm and there I was already pushing it. I tightened my fittings a bit further than necessary, just because I did not want leakage, and I actually did end up slightly cutting my tubing, so with compression fittings you want the same size.

P.S. Have had no problems with compressions fittings so far, so I can only recommend them.

The thing about zip ties is that small piece of zip tie that you were not able to cut of.It is left sticking out(even 1/16" is enough) and it is sharp, sharp enough to cut yourself on.If you are at all prone to moving things around at all (meaning the loop inside the case) you want to be able to pull the hoses off without damaging anything.Cutting the tubing can leave a scribe mark on the barb and water can leak from this small scribe mark.

And you end up cutting the tubing to get the zip tie off anyways. I'm down with the cheap xspc compressions.
