High Temps H100 UPDATE: Should I sell my H100?

Thread Starter
So I have a 2600K with an H100 and I've been running it at 4.8ghz (1.45 volts) for about two months now no problems. Running prime I was getting about 75 degrees after 8 hours. Well last night I left my computer on to download a large file (Skryim HD texture pack from Steam if anyone cares) and my computer froze around 2 am (about six hours after starting the download)

When I woke up my computer was unresponsive and my keyboard showed 2 am as the time so that's how I know it shut off then. So today I tried out my new texture pack and I got about an hour of problem free gaming. Then my computer just shut off on me (it showed the windows shutting down screen, not just an unexpected shut down) I had wondered if it was from heat, but I turned it back on and this time after about five minutes my computer did the same thing, this time I noticed my temperatures were in the high 80s. So I turned my cooler on max settings (its in push pull with the stock fans from my case, and I turned those up too) dialed back my overclock to 4.5ghz rolled back the voltage to 1.4 and ran prime. In about 30 seconds I was in the 80s. I shut off prime and now I'm idling at about 40 (usually around 30)

Tl;dr getting high temps with H100

What is the problem here? Obviously my cooler is working otherwise I would be idling at much higher temps, but it isn't working to its full potential. Hope this doesn't mean contacting Corsair sad-smiley-002.gif

Thanks for reading.

Update: getting new unit and I'm wondering if I should sell it and get something else like the thermaltake version.

First, get the H100 off the CPU and put the stock cooler on. Make sure to set your clocks back to stock.

It sounds like that pump is failing on your H100 which is pretty common from what I hear. They make a slight grinding noise when they fail. You need to send it in for warranty.

I haven't heard any grinding noises but I guess I'll contact corsair anyway :/

I hope they take care of me like they have other members on here.

Okay bit of an update (I'm going to hijack my own thread no sense in making a new one) I called best buy and they're going to let me swap my H100 for another (through the manufacturers warranty, corsair wasn't very helpful when I spoke with them) so I'll have a brand new unit on my hands (hopefully it won't fail too) the question is, should I open it and install it, or should I sell it and get something else? That dual rad thermaltake cooler doesn't look bad.

I don't think it'll better than a H100. Most of these closed loops are so-so TBH. I'd stick with the H100 if I were you.

For 1.45V + I would start considering a custom water loop. The kits that are out there can give you some nice bang for your buck. BUT (big but) WCing is very addicitive and not worth the price if you look at the performance alone. You should consider it more a passion.

I do find it strange that your computer froze from downloading a file. That shouldn't even bump the CPU out of it's idle state ....

When you removed the original H100 what was the state of the TIM? I personally have experienced cases where the TIM just 'dried up' and stopped being effective, replacing the TIM could have solved the problem, just my 2c.

The TT water 2 extreme (dual rad version) is slightly better than the H100 but in my opinion not worth the extra effort.

The TIM was in great shape. It was applied so perfectly I was amazed. And it wasn't dry like you said either.

Why didn't that make sense...?

I really really really want to do a custom loop. I can't justify the cost though. For 3-4 times the price you see very little performance gain. Not to mention lower temps aren't really a necessity for me, my h100 had decent temps at 4.8 ghz and I can't go above 4.8 without more voltage and I don't feel comfortable going over 1.45.

i just want to ask, has your room stayed moderatly cooled? have you checked the fans at all to see if they are working properly? my friend had one of his fans go out and he had a bump in temps, just just something to look into. But yes the pump -even though it may not be making a grinding noise something could be wrong with that.

I would just stick with the H100 if thats the clock your gonna stay at. Its a fairly good temp that you have with that so just save yourself some money.

Yeah my room is freezing. I hate it but I'm sure my computer loves it lol. All my fans work. I even had it in push pull. I cranked all my fans up when my computer overheated.

So it looks like I'll stick with the H100. I like corsair so I'm glad to keep it. The corsair rep told me that new H100 units with the pump issue fixed are shipping the 15th. I'll probably install my new H100 in a couple hours, I'll keep you posted.

Hope the new H100 treats you well, the grinding noise doesn't necessarily mean the pump is on it's way out (and since yours didn't - there's a possibility it was loosing steam as it were).
You should also really consider what the previous poster said regarding your voltage; 1.45v is a lot to pump through your chip w/o a real custom loop.
