Multiple Wi-Fi Antennas...?

Regarding routers/WAPs with 2 or more antennas...How are these utilized? Do they all broadcast/receive the same information? Does one transmit and the other(or other 2) receive?

In a nutshell I want to mess around with this spare WAP I have laying around and I'm trying to determine a replacement antenna type.

Thanks!

EDIT: I probably should have said that I understand that they more than likely use MIMO, but I'm confused on how to go about replacing them.

thats a very good question that I'd be interested to find the answer for. adding a 3rd party antenna probably wouldnt be too beneficial unless you decided to go with a directional antenna though unless you went over the top with some crazy custum antenna. your best bet is simply a better router with a stronger signal or using the router as a repeater for those truely long distances

It's for nothing more than a project.

Thanks. I've been reading some articles about this.
