Crazy water cooling idea - Page 2

Water from the house under the 'cold' tap is still quite warm here in Houston during the summer.
Also, that would be a HUGE hassle to have to manually set up water flow under every instance of load. Want to play a game? Want to do a quick benchmark? Want to do a virus scan? Want to render something? That's too much work unless you put in a load of cash to make the water control fully electronic and controllable through the computer. It's cheaper just to go with a TEC.

Another thing, you'll need a lot more than a filter to make it safe for your loop. It's not just debris you're worrying about. Tap water is chemically different than distilled water. There's a reason people don't use tap water in their loop and under this setup, using it just once would contaminate everything and the tap water would circulate indefinitely unless you tear apart everything.

Thats a good idea. Although this is just an idea that will most likely be never implemented. It's a waste of water.

Now if I owned a big office building and the water cooling system could take the pressure. I could implement it without wasting water. Perhaps I should pass the idea along to a business.

If you want to keep a closed loop system bury some in the ground. Not sure at what depth it is but the ground stays at a constantish temperature year round so you could have nice cool water.

Make the RES big enough and seperate the sytem into 2 loops with a Plate Heat Exchanger. No need to worry about pressure or your PC loop getting dirty or anything else. The RES will heat up over time but everytime you flush the toilet or use the tap in the kitchen or whereever the RES will be flooded with fresh cold water. Like this you can even use it to pre-heat your tap water if needed or who cares if the toilet water will be a bit warm biggrin.gif

In my flat there is a combination boiler for heating and hot water and i thought already to add an extra Plate Heat Exchanger before the cold water tap and a RES so the boiler saves gas to heat up the water because its already pre-heated by my PC. Can you say energy friendly watercooling ? tongue.gif

http://www.ebay.com/itm/40-Plate-Heat-Exchanger-for-the-Price-of-a-30-Plate-/221123677382?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item337bff8cc6

There are also smaller and cheaper ones. Just take care there is not too much resistance otherwise your flowrate is gonna be killed...

I got one of these some time ago and it works just fine. Also great if you want to add a compressor or TEC in a seperate loop. Crossflow cooling is much more effective.

Im actually in the process of adding one to my computer. I went this this unit from koolance.
http://koolance.com/hxp-193-compact-plate-heat-exchanger
im using this for a different purpose tho..
I have a few possible configurations but it all depends on space requirements.
If i feel up to it, I hope to do some testing this weekend if the rest of my parts come in. Im still waiting for the quick disconects so i can test different configurations.
Im still in the design stages so Ill see where it works out the best for my system.

There was a guy using his pool water to cool computers a few years ago: link (third picture down).

Try not to pass it on to a business, you could miss out on a lot if you were to pass it the "wrong" way.

I was thinking, of a fairly easy way to cool fluid below ambiant temps via a home made heat exchanger.

Taking a piece od 5/16"OD soft copper tubbing about 10' long and wrap it in a spiral tightly around your cold water main in. Carefully not to kink it. Would need a few gear clamps to hold the copper tube to the water main. Then run your coolant through the copper tube.

I've got everything to set this up. Just have to purchase some quick disconnects to allow the rig to be unhooked and moved to work bench or LAN party. Should get a few degree's out of it.

Yes that may work at least until the heat from the pipe out of your computer saturates the water line of your house.

Sounds like a good idea but getting the pipe bent around the other with good contact would be quite hard.

Try softening the pipe before bending it, that should help with working with it A LOT.
