$1800 ROG Gaming Computer First Time Build!

Hey everyone! This is going to be my first computer build ever, so any help/support would be appreciated smile.gif Anyways, I plan to start ordering as soon as I hear what you guys think of my build so far:

CPU- Intel Core i5-3570K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor
CPU Cooler- Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus 76.8 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler
Memory- Corsair Vengeance 16GB (4 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
Motherboard- ASUS Maximus V Formula
Boot/Steam Drive- Samsung 830 Series 256GB 2.5" Solid State Disk
Video Card- EVGA GeForce GTX 670 FTW 2GB Video Card
Power Supply- Corsair AX750W ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply
Case- NZXT Switch 810 Gunmetal
Optical Drive- Lite-On iHAS424-98 DVD/CD Writer
Keyboard- Corsair Vengeance K90 Wired Gaming Keyboard
Mouse- Corsair M60 Gaming Mouse

Reasons behind parts, I want to sli my graphics card in the future and still have headroom for overclocking which is the reason behind the PSU. Also the fully modular cables are perfect for buying custom colored coordinated sleeved ones. I already have a 500GB hard drive that I think I will use as backup/storage. Dunno yet. Will be custom watercooling in the future, which is why the cooler isnt the greatest. And a few questions:

I heard EVGA doesnt void the warrenty for putting on a waterblock on their GPUs, is that right?

Is it possible to cache an SSD and make it go even faster?

Whats the best BACKLIT mechanical gaming keyboard out? Im looking at the k90 but its not all mechanical and I wish the colors could change.

Whats the general shipping/delivery time of parts? How long (In hours) does it generally take to build a first time computer, even though i feel like i know what I'm doing (I hope rolleyes.gif )? I'm going to be very busy soon.

And thanks for the assistance!

That Motherboard is a huge waste of $ for gaming. No need for that high-end of a board for just gaming and CF/SLI.

Agreed same with the RAM.

As far as OP's question on keyboard..... go to the keyboard section and read some threads on keyboards. There are a lot of pre-existing threads that you can do some read up on to help you confirm. I personally wouldn't go with that keyboard as like you mentioned, it is a hybrid between rubber domes and mechanical.
And there is no "best mechanical keyboard" that's like trying to answer the question "what is the best HYBRID car?" ... it all comes down to your preference. If it fits you well then, it's the perfect fit for you.

Delivery? Are you ordering from Newegg? UPS Guaranteed 3 days. Depending on your location, it will be faster (I'm from NY and I get mines the day after as it ships from NJ).

Processor/Cooler/GPU/PowerSupply/Optical Drive = Fine
Memory: Get down to 8GB. You don't need 16GB of RAM for gaming.
Motherboard: (as mentioned above) you're overdoing yourself
SSD: This is fine. If 500GB is fine with you as storage then keep it., you can always upgrade later.
Case: Your preference.
keyboard: (mentioned above)
mouse: your preference... use one that fits your hand well. I don't have much experience with corsair mouse/keyboard, but I'd recommend the steelseries sensei (raw or sensei regular)

Thank you, very helpful. One question, why is the motherboard so overkill? I heard it was the current best for gaming, with sli support, watercooling ready, msata/dual band wifi/ bluetooth, and awesome onboard audio. If not, what do you suggest?

You're wrong. The Maximus V Formula IS a gaming motherboard. That's what it was made for! Lol. I say get the Formula. I have it and I love everything about it. So easy to overclock with it.

Edit: I'll continue my post. Another reason to get this motherboard is the fact that you want to SLI in the future. This board supports it. Also, you said you wanted to maybe overclock. Everything on your list looks great to me. I would get 8GB instead of 16GB. There's no need for 16GB. There are some nice mechanical keyboards out there. Check out the Ducky keyboards. They are fantastic. As for shipping, if you order from Newegg, it takes 3 business days. My first build took me about 2 hours. Setting up Windows 7 and stuff took even longer..Lol.

A bit impractical to be getting this for only SLI as other cheaper boards will do the job just fine but it is a beautiful board and for that alone I would not mind spending the extra although I would highly consider the Gigabyte G1 Sniper 3 as it costs the same and it supports 4-way SLI and Crossfire. The Formula only supports SLI and 3-way Crossfire...

I would personally LOVE a ROG mb so I say if you have the money go for it... I think it would be overkill if you don't do extreme overclocking I think. It has a lot of extra features geared towards that. The bluetooth with the android app on my phone is really nice for ASUS mb's. There are other mb out there that are a almost half the price (say 2/3 the price) with sli support. The watercooling for the nb is a nice feature but again you can get that after market on other boards as well.

For a keyboard the Ducky Shine 2 should be soon to come out. It looks pretty nice and is tenkeyless so it would save on space and 'hopefully' cost. I just got my wife a Ducky Year of the Dragon mx-red with purple leds last week and it's very nice. As far as backlight mech's go I wouldn't look too much further than Ducky for a very nice range of colors and switches.

Storage looks fine as zephiK stated. Ram, 8gb is fine for gaming and you really don't need more than that. But again if you have your heart set on a 16gb kit go for it since you can never have too much tongue.gif

Not sure if I'd recommend the M60 as they have been know to have software issues. It sure looks nice though. Steelseries makes good mice. Depending on your grip is really the main question. I LOVE my g9x but that's just my pref.

I have been looking at the switch 810 to replace my 5-year old antec. It is definitely a good lookin case and has been getting good reviews and some excellent mods out of. thumb.gif

If it were me, I'd probably drop the board down to the P8Z77-V, either the Pro or the Deluxe.

Also you might want to think about getting a better cooler.
The 212 is a great budget cooler, but if you decide to lower the Motherboard, you could get something like the the H100 or a D14.

I'd also look at getting some of that new Samsung RAM if you want to get some good memory overclocks.

Hope this helps.

A cheaper motherboard will do just fine for overclocking. Something like the Asus Z77-V Pro or something will be fine for OCing and SLI and whatnot. I am pretty sure u dont void warranty if u add a waterblock for EVGA. Like I saw guys install custom coolers on EVGA cards. However, u do void the warranty for OCing above 1100mhz or something like that. As for cache, a 256gb Samsung would be a huge waste as a cache and no caching does not make SSDs run faster. They make the programs u use more often run faster and what not.

For times as to how long, it depends. My friend took forever cuz he wanted to take pictures and stuff for records (just in case for RMA and stuff). I took lke 3 hours or so cuz I kept on dropping all my screws. LOL But building wont be the longest part. It would probably be setting windows up.

And for watercooling, y only attach blocks to the parts u wanna watercool. I dunno why ud want to watercool a motherboard

Motherboards have essentially two things they do in terms of performance.

1) They let you plug other stuff in so you can use it.
2) Some let you overclock your processor higher.

Other than overclocking though, in general once a motherboard lets you plug something in, it'll perform as well as with any other motherboard.

This is why the Asus Maximus V is overpriced. It's not 'best' for gaming - it's exactly the same for gaming as any other motherboard holding the same processor, assuming the same clock speed.

Lots of other motherboards will let you overclock your processor just fine for gaming, so there's really no point to the Maximus V unless you're plugging 3+ video cards, lots of hard drives, or whatever.

And that's money that could be spent on A)a better monitor setup, B)a better video card selection, C)Better peripherals, D)a nicer desk chair.

That said, you are right about some of the Maximus' advantages. Not watercooling - watercooling the motherboard is a pointless marketing gimmick - Ivy Bridge boards don't run hot. Dual-band wifi/bluetooth might be handy if you don't want to buy a $20 USB dongle that does the same thing. Though wired ethernet will be a superior connection in either case. Same with onboard audio. The Maximus' onboard IS better than other integrated audio solutions, but you can get an Asus Xonar DG for $20 that will do just as well.

If I were you, I'd go for this mobo:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128544
and this sound card:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829132052
(The PCI version won't fit with SLI)

That saves you $90 or so, still fits SLI, and gets you a better sound option.
