Ram runs REALLY HIGH

Thread Starter
My ram is really running quite high. I have 6gb of ram and it runs at 1.8 gb's idle. I play SC2 quite often and its sad that i have to play on low settings. Few months ago I was running on Ultra with 18 tabs of porn open(not really more like 17) and it wouldn't hiccup. Now if I run it on medium with nothing open it's slower then a wheel chair going up a steep hill. Norton picks up nothing, when I go to tasks they are all less then 50,000 KB so nothing really taking up my memory.

System
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit
Intel i7 2.0 ghz (REALLY SLOW i7)
6 GB DDR3 ram
Nvidia Geforce GT 550M
500 GB HDD

The more ram you have the more ram WIn 7 will use on a 8gb system you most likely see 2.25-2.5gb idle usage. When you are running sc2 what is your ram usage? Have you tried running this program to see if it picks up anything?

So how much RAM are you using now?
if it is less then 5GB's you should be fine.

i'd say your ram is running low since 2/3 of it is just sitting around doing nothing

By high I mean it's running at 1.8 ghz idle ( around 28%)
The main reason I'm concerned is because it stopped playing SC2 and I don't remember it having ram run that high a few months ago.
I recently updated my drivers for my GPU it seemed to help a little. I don't know if I should wipe the whole computer (with a backup of course) and just restart with a fresh set of windows 7. My wife uses this computer and has a bunch of her shi-I mean valuable documents on this laptop. It's not nearly full though it still has 380 GB of free space so...

As of right now I have excel and 9 IE9( I know she hates chrome though so...) tabs open (one podcast) and its running at 65 percent. The weird thing is I don't believe it's a virus or something because when it's idle the i7 runs at 0%.

I think you just need to clean up the HDD and defrag it. Is the hard drive 5400 rpm by any chance? can you provide make / model of your laptop?

Laptops a Dell XPS 17 2011. I tried a defrag and it when its analyzed it has says a defrag is not needed. All drivers are up to date as well.

Actually It might be a virus but you would know better.
I am still confused is it you CPU or ram that is running high.
So is it like running at 5GB's at idle or you CPU or what, I am really confused?

Idle RAM usage means nothing, unless it's practically full just sitting doing nothing. All I have open right now is Firefox with 5 tabs and folding and my 6 GB is 46% full. Windows should allocate RAM to Starcraft when you're playing. Is your RAM full while you're playing? You wouldn't see slowdowns in-game unless it was completely full.

Edit: QuietlyLinux- he means that at idle, 1.8 of his 6 GB (he mistakenly typed Ghz) is filled up.
