Well, since we've pretty much covered past history of heat pipes, how about we talk about some future history? Loop Heat pipes.
http://www.thermacore.com/products/loop-heat-pipes-and-loop-devices.aspx
They can transport heat over longer distances and between smaller differences of heat (30c CPU, 25c ambient - works fine, you'll watch the CPU fall to 27-26c). They are also relatively immune to the forces of gravity because the flow of working medium ends up perfectly balanced in the end (much like how a spinning wheel isn't slowed down by gravity - just bearing friction and air resistance).

How long until OEMs start connecting the top of heat pipes together to form loops?

Wentworth Institute of Technology.

We're known amongst the industry as being very good, and when it comes to "functional" engineers, our students are frequently picked over MIT students for jobs. It's the engineering research where MIT students beat us out. WIT alumni are practical engineers, MIT alumni are theoretical engineers.
Even the Architecture and Design programs are known as some of the best in the world - but that's because they put the kids through hell. They have something like a 40% combined drop-out after the first semester alone, and less than 40% of the total incoming class makes it to graduation. But giving them something like 120 hours of homework a week, on top of their 25 hours of class work. They're lucky if they get 5 hours of sleep a night, even more so if it's in a real bed instead of their studio.

But from here on, let's try to keep OT. I dragged this way off.

as far as loop pipes. I'm not quite understanding how the vapor is prevented from exiting the wick / reservoir side of the pipe... and also have a hard time seeing how it would be immune to the effects of gravity. i guess i'll need to read up more on the physics behind the loop pipe vs standard heat pipe.

PS, zalman have been using loop style heatpipes for years. I never really thought much about it till now. maybe they are onto something i didn't know about biggrin.gif

Like I said, it's just like a wheel. If you take a bike wheel and spin it, the mass is always balanced around the axis of rotation, so the force of gravity assisting the spin (on the "downward" spin), and the force resisting the spin (on the "upward" spin) is equal. The only thing that will slow that wheel down is bearing friction.
Now imagine that the fluid in the loop is the wheel.

The Vapor meets resistance upon exiting the loop because there is fluid still in the chamber. It won't be able to condense back until that fluid has evaporated and moved into the heat pipes. Once that fluid evaporates, there is "void" that can now be filled by the vapor that was waiting in the wicking material.
The reason the fluid doesn't all fit by the CPU base at once is because it the fluid has been heated - so it has expanded and is hovering in it's transitional phase.

When it's in a loop configuration, the vapor follows the upper pipe, cools and condenses on the other side of the loop from the CPU, and is returned to the CPU block by the lower portion of the loop. No need for the fluid to travel "upstream", against the flow of the vapor leaving the CPU to be cooled.

Do you know which Zalman coolers have Loop Heat pipes? I've never seen one.

Zalman CNPS9900 MAX
http://www.frostytech.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=2567
The CNPS9900 MAX has what Zalman calls composite heatpipes. The heatpipes are a combination of axial groove type and sintered metal type heatpipes. Zalman says this combination increases the heat transfer rate by 50% when compared to ordinary heatpipes.

That would do it, but It's still only, what? 3 heat pipes? You'll see good performance for it's size.

I want to see Noctua, Thermalright, Phantek and CM (with their Hyper 212+) extend the tops of their heat pipes into loops. I bet the results would be very impressive.

Zalman are not actually loops. Pipes terminate in base wink.gif
post #40 of 43
That is a very good point. I saw that, just didn't make the connection.

Still want to see some loop heat pipe coolers.
