It might (and probably is) just be me, but I literally get a headache after 5-10 minutes of trying to use a CRT, maybe my eyes once waged war on those old clunkers before I existed?

Let me guess, you bought a brand new LCD, put it next to a a cheap (shadow mask),old, probably less-than-healthy, uncalibrated CRT running at a low refresh rate, thought "wow, LCD so bright and clear" and drew your conclusions from that comparison.

For gaming I suggest, 120hz. For the rest: IPS.
